Steering box queston

OK so I sold teh 92 and got a cleaner 93 but it needs a steering box and shaft BADLY (as in shaft is junk and it trashed the seal so it spews out the fluid in minutes.

I've got the bracket loose from the frame but don't have a wrench in my box big enough for the nut holding the pitman arm to said box.

Anyone know what size nut that is ??

I hope to pick up a wrench on the way home tomorrow and finish the tear down but am not sure what size it is and of course since the wife 'cleaned' up my workbench can't find the dial calipers [duhhh]

Thanks in advance,

Brian

I just used a big crescent wrench and a good pitman arm puller after and presto, it came off.
If you really want the socket size I can go measure mine.... but the wrench worked just fine.

My biggest baddest old crescent wrench wanted to try to round off the nut so if anyone has one loose and didn't run out of daylight and can find their measuring tools.. yes the size would be super appreciated

Daylight HA who needs daylight, I live in Canada man it's dark all winter[roll]

I checked for ya, went out of the igloo with no shirt and the calipers say...
32.81mm (I'd go 33) or 1.291 inches (I leave that fractional calculation to you[yuk])
Hope that helps
Dizz

I would spray the nut and pitman arm really good tonight. I tapped mine with a hammer a few times to loosen it up then sprayed it really good and by the time I got back to it it came off real easy.

Highjack. Is a pitman puller any different than other types of pullers?

Yeah, mine is, it's cast one piece with the rod threaded through it. Basically it's compact and strong.
Ok I got off my lazy butt so here ya go. KD Part number 2289 (got it at a garage sale but it works perfect on our stuff)
Attachment 15408

A 3/4 drive socket sets from HF go on sale for 1/2 price a few times a year. They can come in real handy.

I usually tighten the pitman puller up fairly tight, then tap the pitman with a hammer. Don't be under it, mine usually pop off pretty forcefully when I do that.
Remember to grease the threads and tip of the puller well.

OK so when you get your box/bracket off the truck unbolt the box and find the bracket cracked where do you get another one ?
Pay a fortune to the local dealer assuming they are still available or off a junk truck ?

andyr354 09-18-2007 03:44 PM

I got the bracket from the dealer for under $20 earlier this year.

DodgerDoob 09-18-2007 04:15 PM

What about weldin the cracks in the bracket?

rainfade 09-18-2007 04:39 PM

Called my local dealer it is available lists for $16.50 and will be here thursday :-)
Plan B was going to be grinding the crack out a bit and welding but for that price it's getting a new one.

BIG OL THANKS to andy i'd have never thought it was available or priced so reasonably.
