IT pretty well gave up on me the night before last. If I hit it hard enough it will start to grind, and after crossing the terminals a few times it will crank the motor up. NAPA will have a fresh one for me this morning. I think the high voltage issue I've been having may have been caused by the high draw from the starter going bad. The regulator is sticking. But otherwise it's got me from home to Belfield, ND, to McCook, Nebraska without any troubles.

I got a friend here with a pit in his garage that's going to help me swap the starter.

 

Don't turn in the original for the core money, keep it and rebuild it. The originals seem to last a lot longer than the ones you get from an auto parts store.

They are really easy to rebuild also

 

are you sure its not just a corroded starter wire? i think the stock starters are pretty tough. the jacketing can still look good the the wire will be puke green inside

 

I don't know, it was grinding when it turned. Being new out here in Nebraska I didn't really want to take the time to screw with it and got a rebuild from NAPA. Too late on the core, too. Then again, it's a choice between keep the core or have enough money to live another day right now. I have to find a job soon, got a couple offers, the first they seem a little too eager, and their trucks are fairly beat up, so I am going to take the second I think.

I was thinking of trying the Case dealer but figured it wouldn't match. Turns out it's the same starter the 580 Super M backhoe takes.
