Spring under Getrag shifter?

I decided to pull the getrag out this weekend to replace my leaky rear main seal. The tranny works ok but was making a noise in 4th and 5th. It was a metallic rattle like sheet metal. Well while I was pulling the shifter moving it around and what not I heard the noise. I pulled the shifter out to find a tappered spring under it broken. The spring will not come out thru the shifter hole so I assume I'll have to tear the tranny down a bit further. Does anyone know what this springs function is and where I can find a new one? As always you guys/gals are the best!!

That spring holds the shifter stub pinned against the "cup" ring. This keeps it in the proper position and allows it to pivot against the ring. Try calling Zumbrota bearing and gear, they have most of the parts for the getrag. 507-732-7994. To get that spring out I think you need to pull the top cover and take it apart. I remember on mine I left it in, but I took the rest of the top cover apart to put new forks on. Can't recall now but I am pretty sure it won't come out the top.

Yes, I think you have to pull the top off to get to it

If I'm pulling the top off is there any other preventative maintenance I can do while I'm in there? Anything to look for or watch out for? Thanks for the help!

if z-bag doesn't have the spring, try bluementhal in oklahoma city. I got a rebuilt top cover for mine there, It was 300.00 with a $100.00 core. So 200.00 final price. I've had to use them a few times when z-bag didn't have what i needed.

I called the shop suggested a few posts up, they said they would check and get back to me. They haven't. I talked to a local well known tranny shop all they can get is the whole top cover. Same story at the ***********. Any contact info for bluementhal? Thanks.

while the top cover is off you could check the roll pins to make sure they arent coming loose .
