Speedometer quit

Odometer quit last year, I can live with that. Last weekend speedo took 5 miles of driving before it started working. Then it bounced around plus/minus 10 mph for 5 miles then it started working correctly. Worked good for 150 miles then quit as I was going down the freeway. Nothing.
Checked VSS have pulsed signel.
have +5v on connector, (orange tracer) and using the black/blue wire for ground.
OD and shifting worked the whole time.
Can anyone think of any other ideas why it's not working before I drop the money on a used instrument cluster.

Check the drive adapter on the transfer case. They are prone to failure. Also check the wiring. I recently had to bypass mine from the VSS to the firewall.

Yes forgot to mention I did check the adapter, it's OK. Now what I don't know about is the drive inside the tail housing of the T case. It doesn't spin freely so I'm assuming it's OK.

It usually isn't a case of the adapter in the transfer case spinning, rather the internal square drive rounds out.

An easy way to check is remove the adapter and screw the VSS directly into the transfer case.

You can try to spin that square drive with a drill [slowly] and see if the speedo works as well.

Ran all the tests again and the latest, no response, so I'm going for a instrument cluster.

New spedo fix the problem.
I now have bragging rights for high mileage, odometer reads 274K instead of 140K
