simplysmn,
OK!! I see where we are not on the same page!
The top one in your pic IS a speed sensor, but it is the Differential Speed Sensor that was utilized on some models with a single rear wheel, 2WD.... That is not what is usually referred to as the VSS.
The bottom or lower one in your pic is the VSS that every truck I have seen uses, including the 91 SRW 5 speed I had.
We weren't really talking about the same part!!

Necred, your 92 D/W350 will have the VSS, that is the lower one in Smn's pic..

Most have the gear reducer built into the VSS, so if you dont see one on your truck, that is normal.
Sorry if we confused the issue for you

ok at the top of this is what I had to make to make the speedo work because my truck has been converted to 4x4 and it has a 3 wire plug the middle picture is out of a 518 auto trans but the sensor has been pulled out to built what I did to make mine work then at the bottom is a 4x4 speed sensor has a 2 pin connector on 1993 2 wheel drive you should have what show's in second Picture ? if you want I can take what I have made apart to show you ???? this is the Second truck I have converted to 4x4 with 2 wheel drive wiring harness and had to Adapt what I needed to make the speedo work .

Smn, not sure why you would have had to fabricate one to get the speedo to work when doing those conversions, I am 100% NOT a tranny guy!! That would be an interesting question to pose to someone who does trannys tho...but that connector/sensor set up IS the diff speed sensor..

The bottom one is the factory VSS/gear reducer set up that is standard on 99% of our 1st Gens..

well I pulled it out of the 2 wheel drive transmission and reason I have to adapt is my harness has 3 pin the 4x4 will have 2 pin so that's Y I use what I made . Yes the bottom 1 is standard on 5 sp's but Auto is different

Nope, they are the same except for the SWR 2WD autos, they used the Diff sensor.

I wanted to write a post up for the stickey a few years ago about the VSS and how it works/goes together and such because there had been alot of posts about them and I had to repalce mine too, so I studied the FSM, and some TSB's and talked to a couple parts guys at a dealership and an independant shop so I would know what I was talking about when I wrote that post up. I didn't include anything about the Diff sensor in that post, because I really didn't think there were that many out there..pretty much had forgotten about it.. The first truck you used as a donor was a single rear wheel, thats why it would have used the Diff sensor, have no idea why the second one would have, I agree, that is confusing..
My 93 Clubcab auto 2WD dually uses the standard VSS..
