With my Stack on my 91' and a 1100w total system I could still hear the exhaust at all but the highest levels.

with so much CTD growl coming from the firewall and underneath the truck, the placement of the door speakers makes no sense to me.

why not mount a couple of tweeter/mid-range speakers in each of the top cab corners (near yer ears) and a small subwoofer behind the seat?

has anybody removed their seats and laid sound insulation down on the floor?

that should quiet up the cab real nice

I redid the stereo in mine.

I put in an Alpine head unit. Older model, but with the best amp they've ever put in a head unit. It has an ipod connection, and plays mp3 discs. It also has 3 way active crossovers.

I put in a set of 6.75 components. I put the round speakers where the 6x9s went, with an adapter plate I made, and then I dynamatted the entire door.

On the kick panel, on the sides in front of the doors, under the dash, I mounted both tweeters. Just seemed like a good out of the way place with direct views to my head.

Behind the center console I mounted a .55 cube box with a single 10 inch sub in it. I have a 350 watt RF amp powering that. Actually, I blew one of the voice coils in my last truck, so I have one channel of the amp hooked up to the sub, with about ~175 watts.

The Alpine, I mentioned has active 3 way crossovers. This means that the front channels of the head unit are pushing nothing but highs to the tweeters. The rear powered channels are pushing the mids to the mids and the sub outs are running to the amp, pushing the subwoofer. I would say I probably get about 30 watts per channel out of the deck. That's roughly 300 watts. You can't hear Cummins or goins in my truck when the stereo is turned up.

It's all about system design with a stereo. You don't really want speakers behind you. Think about a concert...or sitting in your living room. You have speakers in front of you, making a sound stage. If you close your eyes, you want to be able to make a mental picture of the singer/musicians front and center...speakers behind you drag that image down/back or make it sound like you have multiple musicians. The subwoofer is the exception, as bass doesn't quite drag the image...the soundwaves the subwoofer make are feet long, so its pretty hard to tell where exactly it is.

Anyway, the sky is the limit for stereos in these ol' girls. They've got a relatively big cab and the speaker holes in the doors are for the largest speakers you can possibly fit, so adapters are always an option.

For a great, relatively low cost stereo I'd:

Get a few year old Alpine hed unit. CDA-9813 or CDA-9815. Those were the peak of the car stereo for me. The only thing I might consider above/beyond that would be one of the new Alpines with no CD player, but with great iPod hookup and a screen for the album art. But, that 9813 or 9815 should run about $100-$150 on eBay.

Also on ebay get a set of these: Focal Access 690 CA1. They sell for $185 shipped and Focal Access are the best sounding speakers I've ever heard in a car (for a reasonable price).

That's really all a guy would need. Maybe some dynamat or peel/seal for the doors to seal the soundwaves in (speakers radiate the same but oppositve from the back as they do from the front. Unless you seal a door relatively well you're going to get cancelation, and that generally happens at the low end of the sound spectrum which is the hardest to reproduce in a car anyhow.

When I got my truck the PO has put a couple of 6x9 3 ways in boxes under the seat. I took them out of the boxes and put them in the doors with the factory wiring. The speakers behind the doors are factory AFAIK and they all work fine. I put a cheapo Kenwood radio/CD/USB etc player in the dash but I lost the manual for it so I don't even know how to set the time. I haven't even turned it on since last year. I like the sound of the turbo too much.

You can order a pair of 4x10's from Best Buy online. About $99. Going thru all this now. Prolly won't thump like some of the kids systems i hear but it'll all be new! Gonna really be cool playing music from my i-phone and answering a call with the blutooth Sony I just purchased at Best Buy! Old man not old school no mo!

Cut a 15 inch hole in the roof and install a sub-woofer.

I'd love to keep my OEM radio too but in typical Mopar fashion it is acting squirrely. The volume ****, when it works, works backwards. I bought a new Kenwood unit 3 years ago but too busy fixing important things to get around to installing it yet...

Anyone tried upgrading the center dash speaker? (earlier 80's)

My truck has the hole for a 6x9 speaker in the middle of the dash but no speaker. Makes me wonder if a subwoofer could go there. Do they even make a 6x9 sub?
