So it looks like I have a NV4500 swap already...
Well, I don’t know how many of you have seen my issues I’ve been dealing with... hard to get into reverse and 5th, broken shifter lever, gets stuck in 5th. You know, old truck fun! So, I was researching parts for a Getrag and I noticed that the shift tower I had looked nothing like what I was finding online. A little further googling leads me to believe that I have a NV4500. So, that’s good I guess. I’ll crawl underneath the truck tonight when I get home to do a bit more sleuthing, but for now I do have a pic of the shift tower (also the floor has been hacked to allow for the larger NV shift tower).This look like a NV4500 to y’all as well? https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.die...0216684c1.jpeg |
I don't really know much about the nv4500, but the Getrag has "Getrag" cast right into the side of thhe tranny...Mark

Oliver, just so I know, do you have a good nv4500 for sale? If so how much? I’m leaning towards getting a second unit and then going through this one with my dad (used to work at a tranny shop). I PM'ed you with the options I thought might help. |
I agree with Oliver. Additionally, the 4500 has a cast iron front housing with a cast aluminum "auxiliary" housing on the back. It is pretty distinct looking.
Unless the 4500 has been rebuilt with aftermarket synchronizer clutches, you MUST use the correct synthetic gear oil in the transmission. I don't know what is currently available, it used to be Castrol "Syntorq", and very expensive. I recommend you don't drain out what you have, or top it up with anything, until you have the right oil. The 4500 shifts fifth gear on the countershaft, so there is an extra shift rail inside the transmission case that runs from the main housing into the auxiliary housing down low on the drivers side, with a separate shift fork for reverse and fifth gear. This rail is operated by the reverse shift fork, which also incorporates the the gate for the 5th/reverse shift rail in the cover. By they way, I would characterize your problems with the truck not as "old truck fun", but rather "problems due to inferior work performed by previous owners". . . |

I agree DO NOT drain what is in there until you locate the proper fluid for the NV-4500. The wrong fluid will destroy the synchro quickly. The Chevy or Dodge dealer can get you the fluid they recommend now a days but it is $$. |
