shutdown solenoid dead........pull cable rules
shut down solenoid died yesterday. used a hood release cable off a 79 toyota pickup. mounted handle beside headlight switch in dash. looks and works great.
i dont have any pics yet. the cable is a little long but not by much. the ball on the end is barely too big for the manual shutdown lever so i ground it down until i had to tap it in. the toyota has a nut onthe back of the handle to hold it in place so i just drilled a 3/8" hole in the panel where the power mirror switch would be. i ran the cable through a hole in the throttle linkage bracket and secured it with a good ol' zip tie. works awesome. i will get some pics.
it would NOT die. you turn the key off and it keeps running/idleing. you have to use the manual shut down lever on pump to kill it. so i run a cable inside to kill it. i read on here that with the pump turned way up it will continue to "eat" shutdown soleniods.
Now you all have me confused.
There is a solenoid on the injector pump that can go bad and shut the engine down.
It will not start or run when this happens and must be pretty common; because, the Cummins doctor in my area is often called out to a stranded truck, or piece of equipment, and this is usually the problem.
I have an ignition-on=hot wire on my truck that goes to this solenoid.
Where is this shut-down solenoid that can go bad and the engine not shut off??
Where is this manual shut-down valve??
Pictures would be nice.
Thanks.

If the coil opens then the selenoid won't open and allow the fuel to flow. It won't start in that case. If the rubber tip is damaged it won't seal the fuel and it won't shut down. Same solenoid two different failure modes.

Exactly, The Solenoid Is On The Back Of The Pump Above The Fuel Lines. The Shutdown Lever Is On The Driver Side Of The Pump, Lever Points Down, Pull Towards The Firewall To Shutdown.

(Sometimes I feel like a real idiot next to all these "diesel geniuses")

So I can rig up a manual kill/cable like on a big truck and be one less electrical thing to fail??
I can even rob one out of a dead truck that says "ENGINE STOP" and is red/shaped like a stop sign.

Welcome to the pull cable club Big tan. I bought my cable at carquest when my solenoid went bad. and I put mine in the same location. Ive had it on there for close to a year now, and dont mind it at all. by the way, it works as a theft deterent as well. just leave it pulled out.
