Shims for getrag?
Shims for getrag?
How does that work? I read the section in the FSM on the rebuilding the getrag. Do I need to have all different sizes in stock? Make my own shims? Or does generally it use the same shims from the factory after a overhaul? And where do I get these?
Getting them can be the trick. www.standardtransmission.com or www.quad4x4.com might be able to get them. A big bearing house should be able to match them up. I was looking at about 40 bucks from the local bearing shop for assorted sets for both the main and counter shafts. As for how it works, you place the tranny front side down on a flat surface and allow the counter and mainshaft to settle against the new bearings and races. The different shims are necessary because every bearing/race combo is going to be different, but the preload on the entire assembly still needs to be within spec. I got lucky and was able to use the old shims with some extra.
I got my shim set thru Standard Transmission. It was an assortment and I had to mix and match to get the right combination for my transmission. The left overs are waiting for me to tackle rebuilding my spare Getrag.
