Shifter Woes : Automatic Tilt Column

Well to further add to my FRUSTRATION with Automobiles and NOT have it be MY FAULT:

I took the truck in to get 2 new rear tires 225/70R19.5, yep big truck tires. The shop gets them installed over lunch and I pay the bill $412.00 and go to leave. The Shifter has no Detents left in it, you can move the shifter from Drive to reverse and vice a versa by just flicking the lever.

I take it back and they stand around scratching their heads trying to figure it out. After an hour they decide I need to bring it back later so the can dissassemble the column and fix "the loose spring or clip" that dropped out due to "wear". ********! It worked when I pulled in and was broken when I picked it up.

I have located a used one, but its $100 and 75 miles away. Still unable to locate a good exploded parts view at the dealer. Any suggestions??

The detent (AKA rooster comb) is in the transmission, not on the column. Drop the pan, you'll see what dropped off or broke.

And where would one procure a new "rooster comb"?

It my be due to wear but it was probably assisted ,to demise, by someone wrenching on it in a hurry. The shop should at least offer free labor for the repair.

No doubt it was old, but when it worked going into the shop; I expect it to work coming out of the shop less than 1 hour later

I had a problem similar to this when I bought my truck. I would be making a left turn and the lever would just move into reverse. I ended up curing it by adjusting the lever that connects the column to the lever on the tranny. Another possiblity is that the spring and ball keeps the rooster comb in place has came out. This happened to a friend of mines gas burner.

This is most likely what happened.

Does anyone know where I can view a diagram of this assembly, so I am not diving in blind?

See step one and three ~

In my mess, the comb part had worked itself loose on the shaft. That slack allowed the ball to pop out of place. Peening around the comb's mount fixed it right up.

Hope this helps.
