Shift Kit?

I got a shift kit from the local parts store for a A518, or 727 same thing, and all that came in the package was 3 springs and the shift rod/pin. And instructions to drill this hole bigger, drill hole here, etc.

Does this sound right? I have never done a shift kit or much with autos doesn't seem too complicated, just take a little time.

Thanks, Aaron

Who made the kit? Some are better than others.

It says pioneer on the box, which is the company the Checkers gets most of there drivetrain type parts from, however in the directions at the end it says that if you want more information contact the research department at Transgo. So I think it might be a transgo kit reboxed by someone else.

You have the 3 speed right? no OD? If that is the case it sounds about right, if it is the OD unit you should have a few more springs. There should probably be a new shuttle valve and the shift rod / piston.

So how much does this shift kit cost, and what's it supposed to do?

There should be a new shuttle valve also, IMO. The kits vary in price from 50 buck to about 170. They raise line pressure, fluid flow to the OD unit, fluid flow to the T/C, modify shift points and quickness ( some call it harshness) of the shift. The faster shifts are better because there is less wear in the clutches and bands.

It's just one of the items that the "more expensive" kits upgrade. I cannot comment on your kit because I have never seen it, but I personally like the SMR kit. Lots of good upgrades, but more money.

What's the difference between the SMR shift kit and a valve body from DTT, etc?

Can't comment on the DTT stuff, The SMR kit seems to be more "complete" than some of the others that I have installed. It addresses a lot of issues with the stock unit. The quality has been top notch.

Let me say--I get nothing for recommending these guys, but Pat is a great guy and has always been good to me. Below is something I copied from his web site.

We have assembled a Valve body kit that gives you proven parts and information on how to properly upgrade the performance of your overdrive transmission.

The installation of this kit requires previous experience in working with Torqueflite valve bodies and strict attention to detail to obtain satisfactory results and benefits. We provide detailed instructions and recommendations on what to look for and how to carry out the task successfully.

DESIGNED FOR STREET, HEAVY DUTY AND HIGH PERFORMANCE IT IS MORE THAN JUST A SHIFT KIT-

This comprehensive kit also corrects many of the problems that can lead to early failure of the original transmission.

This kit addresses the problems of:

premature band failure;
inadequate lube oil resulting in burned planetaries;
converter damper shopring failure and lock-up clutch burnup;
weak 2nd and 3rd shift;
lock-up shudder;
converter drainback causing slow engagements.
firmer shifts and firmer converter lock-up are obtained.
This "user friendly" kit FEATURES:

revised valves, springs, seals, filter, pan gaskets, shaft seal and drain plug kit;
comprehensive detailed instructions that not only tell what to do, but also explain the effects of such modification;
specialized tool fixtures, drills and various emery paper to carry out the task;
inside the container lid is a detailed breakdown view of the valve body for use as a working reference;
all components are packaged in re-sealable poly bags - no shrink plastic melted to springs, valves, etc.
ALSO AVAILABLE : A KIT DESIGNED SPECIFICALLY FOR HEAVY DUTY USE IN THE '99 -'03 44RE, 46RE and 47RE.

This kit includes an additional governor pressure control valve which will allow operating pressure to be raised for heavy duty use without setting an error code in the computer. This increased operating pressure provides greater holding power of the bands, clutch packs and torque converter to prevent slippage and heat build up. Increased lubricating pressure of the planetaries is also extremely important when operating these transmissions in heavy duty applications.

ORDERING INFORMATION:

VALVE BODY UPGRADE KIT: Part No.SM518S - $159.95(US) $211.73 (CDN)

HEAVY DUTY UPGRADE KIT: Part No. SM518HD -$174.95(US) $237.70(CDN)

Thanks Mcmopar, been looking for more smr info. We haven't been able to reach the smr website here in the midwest for some reason. Mentioned it to smr in a email, their reply email was garbled. Evidentally some problem between here and there.

Sure sounds like it does the same thing an aftermarket vb does, except your saving $200+ cash and doing the work yourself.
