serpentine belt not lining up
serpentine belt not lining up
I have a 92 2 wheel drive with air ,the serpentine belt keeps riding up on the ac compressor pulley ,,,as I see it there is no way to align anything ,they all attatch to the engine with no adjustments
,,,I just bought this truck and did the kdp check and noticed that the old belt was missing one of the groves around the belt so I thought I would replace it ,,I've checked for alignmentand if anything I would have to say the ac unit looks out of line ....anybody got any Ideas??????
It could be that your tensioner pulley is shot. I know mine and several others had the belt riding 2/3rds of the pulley, thats usually a sign. BUt it shouldnt be your AC compressor, to be that that out whack that its riding out of the grooves means something is seriously misaligned.

It is probably the idler but when mine would not line up it was a really, really bad alternator bearing that threw everything out of alignment. The idler jumped around a fair bit because of it. I put on another alternator and for the first time since I owned the truck the belt looked like the engine wasn't running. I found the cheapest idler locally at Cummins but I now know that they can be had for less at more ordinary parts outfits. Dodge wanted double the price that Cummins charged.
Also, the AC bearing can go bad. The good news is that any bearing from a similar AC compressor will fit. Most Mopars of that era have a similar compressor. The difference is that a flange on the casing is missing on the Cummins. Two minutes with a grinder makes them the same. They cost $10 bucks at my favorite pick a part outfit. You will need the piping and flanges from your old one because the Cummins ones come off at an odd angle.
A lot of people carry a non-AC serpentine belt in case the Compressor bearing quits.

The belt on my truck has been riding up on the a/c pulley for years. I just drive it and don't worry about it. Funny thing is, is that it didn't start until I put on a new tensioner. I tried another new tensioner, and another new belt but it still doesn't track right.
