Second gen fuel tank? Will it fit?

Ok so I recently bought a 1991 D350 cab and chassis dump truck, someone along the trucks life has cut out all of the main supports for the back half of the frame. The second main support for the fuel tank the two other further back supports and the main support for the shock mounts. I’m going to a junk yard to cut out the brackets I need to repair the frame. I’m trying to find a 1991 and newer fuel tank but they just can’t found in the area. Will a second gen fuel tank fit being that it is a dump truck? Are the straps in the same location? They also cut the wiring for the original fuel tank so the fuel gage in the cab does not work. Does anyone have a wiring diagram that I can repair and replace to find a new connector? Right now you have to lift the dump bed all the way up to fill a fuel cell in the back of the frame they mounted, that has no level sending unit in it. I would like to remove this and put a factory tank back.

Thank you in advance!

The 1st and 2nd gen fuel tanks [and fuel tank straps] are pretty different. I would think it would be a pain to try and get a 2nd gen tank to work.

Where are you located? I ask as I have a spare 1st gen tank along with the right fuel sending unit, fuel tank straps and wiring.

Welcome to DTR!

In broad strokes... the 2nd gen tank isn't that different. But its also not a direct fit. I plan to use one in my '75 to get away from the in-cab tank. I think its 5gal bigger too.

I am located around Pittsburg pa 15627, if your willing to ship? How much would you want? How different is the second gen tank? If the straps are not long enough that would just mean the post needs extend, that’s not hard as I cut off the 3/8 stud on my other one and installed 5/8 due to the last strap breaking there, after a couple other parts I finally have the dump bed working as it should now to fix the cradle. Also was looking at the truck not really thinking it’ says cab chaise on the title but only has 250 emblems on the truck? It is a Dually tho, it says on the cab were the drivers door is that it is only has a 3500 pound front axle and 5600 rear there to rusty to see if they have been changed, are there any major parts different from a 3500 pound front axle vs the 4000 pound front I seen when looking at parts?

thanks all!

I see your point on the in cab tank. I had one on my '64 F-250. It's a bomb.

Measure the wheelbase vs what the tag says. Also how tall is the frame channel? 6, 7, ot 8"? Those are probably your best clues as to whether the doors & nose have been swapped, or its a pickup that's been made into a dumptruck with DRWs.

I have both tanks buried out back somewhere, not easily dug out to compare. They're basically the same shape. Frame widths didn't change. IIRC, With enough wheelbase and ground clearance, anything is possible.

If 2wd, the 4000# front ends have bigger balljoints, bigger steering linkage and TREs, and different lower control arms. Wheel bearings are larger too, and thicker rotors.
