With the rising price of fuel...........
Since diesel is getting pretty close to $4/gal here, my 14 mpg is really bugging me. When I first bought this thing it got a solid 18. I took the dually's off and put on the 12cm it dropped to about 16. I have been living with it. But now that I put the big exhaust on it dropped again to about 14.
So today I was looking for something to do.... So I backed out the smoke screw untill it was not doing anything. Went for a drive and it didn't seem to affect it too much, maybe a little letting the clutch out from a stop, going uphill.
Then tightened the starwheel as far as it would go. If I go any more it won't "click". Went for another drive. I actually like the way it runs now better. It still has all the snort as before, but not unless you want it. I actually think it revs more freely to 3k now. Before it would surge up to about 2500 and then you had to step on it pretty good to go faster.
So then I advanced the timing as far as the slots allowed. Now have probably 3/16-1/4" It could go a little more before it actually hits the head, but seems to have ran out of slot. That made a big difference. Boost at 60mph it down 2-3 psi. EGT at 60mph it down about 50-75* I can still hit 38 on command. Now I have to work a lil to hit 1500*. There were alot of cops around today, so I couldn't try too hard.
Anyone see anything wrong with what I did?

Same here. Smoke screw all the way out, star wheel up a couple of turns (soon to be more). I get 19mpg on #1, #2 should be at the pumps here pretty soon. I should get some in Oklahoma this weekend, should help pulling the trailer.

The way my pin is ground, it was actually going to far down. It was going over center if you know what I mean. I need to either grind more on the top end or limit the travel.
I got to drive about 3/8 of a tank after the mods.
The good news is just driving the last part of the tank raised the mpg to 16. I think it is going to help quite a bit.

Gone back down to 3.94 here from a high of 4.09.
Crude has dropped over $10 a barrel this week. Fuel went up in a hurry when it was rising.. now when it drops they take their time to lower the price.
