replacing stereo, I have a couple wiring questions.

I just need to know which wires are the ground, lead to battery and lead to ignition.

Also, is one of those wires tapped into the dash dimmer that's on the harness for the stereo? or will I have to run it to the dimmer switch? If I have to run it to the dimmer switch, which wire is it?

Thanks in advance.

Rick

Why don't you buy the adpater that goes from factory harness to spliceable wires that you run into the stereo... There only $7 at walmart and they save ALOT of headache, i tried to find the same thing you're trying to find and could never find out what was what.

If you order it off the internet, its 84-93 Dodge ramcharger, they never list pickup. If you buy it at walmart it says soemthing like "84-01 chrysler vehicles" ...it should look like this.

I just put a JVC head unit in the 91, it had all the factory wiring and harness intact and this wire harness adapter made it 10x easier. .. the dash install kits (plastic) are a little harder to find these days

Well I could go that route but I'm putting new speakers in all around as well. The 3 wires I'm looking for are 3 of only 5. I just don't want to get it wrong.

My FSM diagram says the E2 wire is illumination (not sure if that's tapped into the dimmer or not), L7 is the park lamps (not sure what that means or is really for), M1 is battery (easy enough), X12 is acc/run (again, not sure which this is for. Possibly ignition?), X61 is mute (again, I don't know what that's for) and then the x60 is is the feed wire but it's not on either of those harnesses, FSM says it's a separate wire I guess.

I don't remember there being a ground wire in the factory harness. Just that big ground strap that bolted to the back of the radio.

Ok if someone could confirm this for me I think my fsm says this:

E2 wire (orange) - to headlamp switch pole I via fuse #14 (3amp)
L7 wire (yellow) - to headlamp switch pole R (straight connection I think, well through a spice but you know...)
M1 wire (pink) - to battery feed
X12 (red) - to ignition
X60 ?????? \
X61 ?????? / -- One of these 2 has to be the ground...

E:

yeah, I remember the ground strap... I wonder if I could use that or something... I guess making a ground is easy enough lol

If you look at the FSM, the wiring diagram shows the radio with a big circle around it going to ground. That would mean that the ground strap attaches to the frame of radio.

My truck didn't use x60 or x61. Those were blanks.

You have the 91.5 though. I don't have the supplement for you truck.

Theres a little screw on the back of all aftermarket radios, thats where the ground strap goes.

Just unscrew it from the stock radio, screw it to the back of the aftermarket stereo and good to go , there is no ground in the harness.

And if you're running new speakers then you could just hook the factory wires up to the aftermarket speakers and still be able to use the wire harness and save trouble...... think about it. The wires are already in the doors and behind the seat. Just cut the factory ends off of them and crimp on the speaker spades that are included with the speaker.

Ok after tearing everything apart, I've figured it all out except the dimmer. Either the E2 or L7 wires has to be the dimmer. I'll just turn the key on and use a volt meter to find out which one it is I guess. I'm just running new front speaker wires because they were in rough shape. I'm using the old rear wires though. I did find a bad ground wire going to the cargo light/belt alarm. Managed to fix that in the process too.

In your FSM section BF pg 2 (BF-2)

E2 is illumination
L7 is parking lamps

Sounds you're doing well on your own, though. Good luck!

yeah, I know what those 2 wires are labeled as but I don't know what each is for exactly. I mean technically what is a parking lamp wire doing being tapped into the factory cassette player? and illumination is straight forward but is that the dimmer or just like a running light wire or what? I could see the illumination light being the dimmer and the parking lamp wire being a running light wire or something... I have no idea, I'll find out tomorrow though.
