Repairing my Gear Vendors

I pulled apart my GV overdrive, found one of the cone clutch linings worn off.
I am shopping around for Kevlar band lining that I can buy, gut and glue it in.

I had all the parts vatted today and it looks brand new! Pictures to follow.

Everything else looks great, so if I can just get the friction material for a wet clutch I should be golden.

I had a single piece driveshaft made for it when I stuck the GV in my truck 6 years ago, but it wouldn't engage the overdrive so I yanked it and put the two piece back in. Worn out two sets of splines since then!

Even if I can't fix it I will run it as a dummy for a while until I can afford the $1,200 to get it rebuilt by GV or an aluminum one piece.

Are you really going to do that.

mhuppertz Jun 5, 2015 10:51 PM

If I have to. I plan on getting the GV up and running.

GV won't sell you the lining material?

mhuppertz Jun 6, 2015 06:19 PM

Nope. They are buggers that way.

mhuppertz Jun 6, 2015 11:17 PM

I emailed them AGAIN and begged them to either sell me the friction material or a new cone clutch.
They won't, and will either ignore me or send me another terse response.
Also sent a million emails out to friction companies to see if any of them can help me. Raybestos has an agreement with GV not to sell to GV customers.
They make probably the best OD unit, but have the worst support.

I never had a GV apart but they look just like one's in a volvo car from 1970'-at least the mid 80's had few of those apart. Take your dead part to volvo its worth a try ken

I was going to say the same thing GV is nothing more than laycock OD.

Used in lots of british and volvos parts do interchange.

Its the bleeping adapter that gv makes that is what they as flipping proud of.

you can go to most any pic and pull and get a od for 50$

WARNING what ever links Ive posted and statements Ive posted in this tread use at your own risk.

I have NOT done any research to totally confirm that a gv and Volvos OD's are the same units. And which laycock model #

I only came to this reason of madness after seeing Derek's pic in this https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...enders-322111/ of his unit without the oversized oilpan.

At first I thought I'd saw that pic on this forum. I was wrong. Friday nite saturday morning I woke up in the middle of the nite THAT LOOKS LIKE A VOLVO

I thought they sold rebuild parts? if not, would they source to a trans shop?

PapeCAT Jun 7, 2015 12:13 PM

Not to defend GV's actions but obviously they chose to take the blowback of a certain amount upset customers to make policies that discourage home/backyard rebuilds of their units. This could be for many reasons, but making more money is surely to be at the root, UNLESS there is some other contingency like a lack of good cores so they don't want any units Rebuilt out of a controlled situation which might put the cores at risk of irreversible damage. Then after those units fail, sent back for an exchange after the core is compromised, and GV has to eat the loss and send out a good unit anyway.

I'd be interested to know what the actual story is.

But that said, I'm more of a manual trans 4th gear with 255/85R16 tires and 3.54s type of towing guy. With a 4x4 2 low option of course.

I try to avoid going into 2 low on my twin sticked divorced NP205 because after I'm done, I have to crawl underneath and put the input/output back in phase again to mitigate subtle driveline vibes.
