Is there any way to convert the rear drums over to the second gen style. Just so you dont need to remove the axle and bearings to get the drum off.

 

Don't you have a D80 to install ? ......

 

I have the dana 80 but it has 4.10 gears and I dont want them I like the 3.54 ratio.

 

i'm sure a dana 70 from a 2nd gen would be no different than a dana 70 from a 1st gen. i've even been told you can swap the drums from our 70s to an 80.

 

I seem to remember reading something about it but now I cant find it. If I am remembering it right it said that the 80 uses the same bearings and all as the 70. But my memory aint much lol...

 

pulltilbroke told me something along those lines as well. all the components from our 70 will bolt right onto an 80. i believe he did just that with the 80 he's running.

 

I would love to put the 80 in it but then I gotta get a new carrier and gears. someone will chime in that has done it.

It sucks cause the one I have is the cab and chassis one that is the right width for my truck and it is ls. but the carriers for the 80 are 4.10 and numerically higher and 3.54 and numericly lower. So I would need a new carrier and gears.

 

So does any one know the answer to my original question? Can the hubs and drums of a second gen dana 80 go on a first gen dana 70? Or can the hubs and drums for a second gen dana 70 be swapped onto our rear?

 

If I remember correct; you can't swap disc's onto a DUALLY D70, but you can for a single rear wheel D70 (or a D71).

You'd have to swap to a D80 from a Dually also. I'm looking for one as well.

 

I am not looking to swap to disc brakes just looking to have the ability to remove the drums without taking the bearings and all appart. I have a c&c dually dana 80 but I dont want to swap it in.

 

from what i remember (3 years ago) the guy helping me rebuild a rear said i could get a different drum that would fit over the front of the hub rather be pressed to the back side with the studs. This would require me to change the offset of the wheels i was using though, so i didn't bother. I also remember reading that the spindle and bearings for the floating hubs are very similar...

 

To bad no one has a ford dana 70 with floating drums laying around to see if its the same thing...
