REALLY difficult start, cranks fine

It sounds to me like you have a bad lift pump.
Check the lift pump for flow, air leaks, and restriction. First take out the bleed screw above the filter and crank the engine, if you don't get a whole lot of fuel gushing out you have a fuel supply problem (spec is .75 l/30 seconds - or enough to make a real big mess
). Before condemning the lift pump, plumb a section of clear hose in between the lift pump inlet and the supply line and watch for bubbles. If you have a vacuum gauge handy, tee that in there as well and check the restriction - it should be no more than 3 in.Hg at 1500 RPM.
I had the top off of the inj. pump again and left it off overnight, covered of course. I came back the next day and the pump was almost empty! If the pump front seal is leaking into the crankcase will it show an external leak also?
Has anyone replaced a injection pump due to it being worn out? What were the symptoms? If I do get my truck started and drive it it seems like it does not pull as hard as it once did. I am getting the same 25 psi of boost but only about 1000-1075 deg. exhaust temp where as I can usually see close to 1300 when really loading it up. Seems like my pump is giving in. Unfortunately.

You can pull the oil fill elbow, then pump the primer lever to pressurize the injection pump and use a mirror and flashlight to watch for a leak from the injection pump shaft.
"Making" oil is a symptom of a fuel leak into the crankcase...
When these injection pumps get worn out, they usually still start fine cold but want to die out when idling hot and are then hard to refire.

Ok, now for an update. Disassembled the inj pump and it was full of rusty residue from the bad diesel. Cleaned everything up and found a broken distributor head return spring.
I replaced distributor head with a used from bgilbert and replaced the return springs. Bumped the timing 1/8 or so and put the 3200 rpm spring and this thing is back in a big way. The 92 runs like a champ and starts immediately. It is a little noisier with the timing bump but the off idle drivability is so much better. I think that I am going to leave it just like it is. Thanks guys.
E mail if you want any specifics. Oh and the snap-on inj pump wrench and flywheel engine rotating tool are 2 tools worth picking up.
