What is this noise? Getrag noise?

My truck suddendly developed this ringing noise when moving over 20 mph. The sound seems to stay constant. The clutch does not effect it. Neither does the gear. It sometimes comes and goes. I am not sure what it is.

Attached is a video. You can hear it well with earbuds. The truck does not jump out of gear or anything unusual. Here are two links to videos of the sound.

Dunno if that's a transmission sound. Sounds more like something is loose and rattling.

Kick your exhaust pipe a few times when the truck is shut down. Might not help, but I have been surprised by loose baffles/clamps, hangers, before, and it doesn't cost much to check . . .

If your truck has a 2 piece rear driveshaft, check the little metal shield on the hanger bearing. I have seen them come loose and make a noise like that, as they bounce around on the shaft.

Tourqefan,
You nailed it. I just crawled under there and the dust sheild is loose. Definitely what's making the noise. Any idea how to fix it? I was thinking some rvt around it might work. It would be very hard to cut it off without damaging something else.

One more sound. It has done this since I bought it. It Sound like a grunting noise when creaping around slowly in 1st, 2nd or reverse.

I wish my GetRAG was a quiet as yours.

Mine rattles when in neutral at idle. It rattles at certain speeds like at 3rd gear at 25-30 mph. My previous one did that also but my rebuilt one is worse.

Mine doesn't really make any noise. When my original grenaded, I found a Chrysler factory rebuilt unit on eBay for 650.00 bucks. I contacted the seller and asked him what's up with it. He said that he runs a core business and sometimes they owe him cores and they send him good ones. I bought it and when I removed a PTO cover to take a look inside, Everything looked brand new, but I found the ball from the end of the shifter laying in the bottom. A very good thing that I checked. I put 2 of the fast coolers on it, 3 extra quarts of oil and it just purrs along, no noise at all. How they missed that steel ball in the case, I don't know...Mark

Awesome, I love it when a guess pays off! There must be several ways to make a decent repair. I can't remember if we would tap it back into place after we dented in the edge a bit to make it grip better, or maybe tapped it back into place and then tacked it slightly with a MIG welder. Give the RTV a try, it doesn't hurt anything to try.

I wrapped electrical tape around the dust shield and driveshaft.. That fixed it!
