Ran out of fuel?

My 91 died like it ran out of fuel while driving. The first time this happened it was the water separator. Second time the mechanical fuel pump. I have replaced both with no luck. Any one have any ideas? I would appreciate any feedback.

How full is the tank?

How did you know it was the water separator and lift pump as your earlier culprits?

Maybe you have joined the very popular "I have an air leak in my fuel system club".

Assuming you don't have an air leak. Did you bleed the system after you replaced the lift pump? You have to open the bleeder at the top of the fuel filter and pump the lever on the lift pump to fill the filter and flush out any air. Then you loosen the return line banjo at the rear of the inj. pump and work the lever on the lift pump to flush air out of the inj pump. Finally you have to crack the injection lines and crank the starter until you see fuel coming out of the lines. then tighten them down and start the engine.

Check the connection to the FSS, especially if it died fast. This is very common...Mark

Depending how it died this is a very good point. A loose FSS connection has caused my '89 Ramcharger to die suddenly on the road.

The OP did not go into much detail of his issues, so we are kind of just guessing with limited info on the problem and the solutions he has tried already...

Welcome to DTR.
The tank is 3\4 full. A mechanic online told me to start with the water separator and check if the mechanical pump had pressure by pumping the handle. I have had a small leak coming from the Bosch pump for some time.

Did you check the fuel shutdown solenoid? Did the truck die suddenly? It could be very simple to fix..Mark

How do you check the fuel shut down solenoid? Or should it be replaced?

It is the solenoid looking thing on the backside of the pump. It has a single wire on it. It is how the truck shuts down. If the wire is loose, and it commonly is, it shuts down the truck, ask me how I know. It shuts the truck down suddenly, not by degrees as low fuel would probably do...Mark P.S. it should have 12 volts on the wire when the ignition is on or the truck won't run or will shutdown...

I know about the wire I had that issue before. I am wondering about the solenoid itself. A new one is about $125.

If you suspect that the FSS is no good, you can remove it, gut it by taking out the plunger, reinstall and see if it works. You would then use the manual shutdown to, well, shut down...Mark
