Quick Question about Turbo's....

I have searched the threads and it brings up every thread with "tubo" anywhere in the thread... please forgive me... How do you identify the different turbos? I have a '91 and am under the impression that performance can be improved by going to a later(?) or earlier(?) turbo. I think mine is, like, a 21cm and I need a 16(?)cm... What years should I be looking for and is it an easy swap ie. no cutting and welding exhaust pipes??? Thanks in advance. To crossy's son... loved the IP advance video... thanks. Rockfoot

is your truck a early 91 or late 91. is your engine intercooled? non-ic engines have 18.5cm exhaust housings. and i just found out that stick or auto they are the same. intercooled engines have a 21 or 21.5cm exhaust housing. some people put 12cm or 16cm housings on. spools quicker but less overall power and more egts

yes, it is stamped on the backside of the exhaust housing just next to the flange. should be an 18.5cm housing. the only i/c motors that received the 21cm housing were the '92s. '91.5s and '93s had the 18.5cm housing. the reason they reverted back to 18.5 housing after '92 was from all the low power complaints.

well i can see why you're confused. i've heard otherwise, but the only way to prove it, would be to use a small mirror to look at the back of your turbo for the stamped number. but regardless, if yours is non i/c '91, you have an 18.5.

What they mean on dodgeram.org is the 91.5 INTERCOOLED trucks have the 21cm housing.

Your truck being non intercooled will have the 18.5cm housing. On the BACKSIDE of the exhaust housing UNDER the downpipe OFFSET towards the engine you will see the numbers stamped "18.5" or it'll say "21" ...your knees on the core support will hurt after a few minutes so look for it quick

All the Non i/c trucks we've had, had 18.5cm housings which aren't THAT bad....But a 12cm housing is much better , For your mostly stock truck. An HX35/12cm turbo off a 2nd gen cummins is a nice upgrade for spool up and a nice whistle , and a few more MM's on the compressor side as well. bolt on
