quick afc fuel cone ? (pin stuck) Please help

Hello, I was bored today so I decided to go in and turn the fuel cone to the deepest part. My ? is I cant see the pin that rides on the cone. Where is this little bugger? I look down the hole the diaphram and cone came out of and I cant see it. I tried opening the throttle and still didnt see anything Where is it located? Could it be stuck? Thanks

Could definitely be stuck. Mine was stuck too.

I just worked the throttle linkage back and forth until it finally popped out. once it did I lubed it with some light oil and kept working the throttle and pushing it back in. After a few minutes it worked great and I think it made a huge difference in performance. Just be sure you push that pin back in before trying to reinstall the cone/diaphram so they don't hit.

EDIT: The pin is located towards the front of the vehicle and pops out towards the firewall.

I see it in there. Is it suppose to pop out when I move the throttle or is it operated by the vacuum? If its suppose to come out with the throttle it is stuck. Any tip on getting it out? Is it safe to spray a little wd40 in there? Thanks again guys

Yes, but you might need to cycle the linkage all the way to help it pop out. Mine took several cycles before it finally popped out. I sprayed some WD-40 in mine to help it and I think that is fine because the fuel does not actually come into contact with anything inside that part of the AFC.

On mine it seems to stick out about 1/4 inch. Far enough to travel halfway across the hole the fuel pin fits.

Sorry guys just a few more newbie ?s Ok let me make sure I am doing this right. The pin should pop out the full distance when I move the throttle forward one time? Is there anything in there that could of broke preventing the pin from moving out? I am trying to soak the pin area in penetrating lube but without any success so far. I guess I will just keep trying. Thanks again

Yeah, it looks like it comes out just over half-way across the hole. It is supposed to come out full distance each time the throttle is cycled, so your's is definitely stuck. I'm not experienced enough to know if something behind the pin could have broke, but my guess is probably not if your truck is still running normal.

The really good news is, you will probably have a totally different truck once you get that pin unstuck! If it hasn't been coming out at all even under WOT, then that will make a much bigger power difference than turning your fuel screw in!

Thanks jrussell, this could be why I am disapointed in my truck on the top end. Now if that darn thing would just come out of there. Going back out to try, wish me luck. Later

This thing is stuck!!! it looks like there is some sort of cap on the acf towards the radiator about the same level as the pin. Does anyone know if this can be taken out to get access to the pin? Thanks

I have noticed the same cap and it does look like access to the other side of the pin. I had the whole AFC top removed the other day to install a 3200 spring and you cannot access the pin from underneath that way (it is blocked off from the bottom). I just wonder if there is a spring and other components behind that might pop out if you undo that cap?

Has anyone had this cap off? I have come to the conclusion something has to be broke. I have soaked the pin with pb blaster for a couple hours with no luck. It wont even start to come out. Also how does the throttle linkage brackets that block that cap come off? Thanks again

I think that linkage comes apart when you do a 3200 spring install. Try checking the instructions posted at the top of this forum for details on how it comes off.

Also, you might want to stick a small flat-head screwdriver down in the hole and VERY LIGHTLY tap at the pin area with a small wrench or something. Then try and cycle it again and see if maybe just the tapping will break it loose. Even if you're tapping it inward it should still help break it loose.

Well it has beat me. I tried everything with no success. I guess it will have to go back together for now since I need it to be running. Might have to set up an appointment at the cummins shop to see if they can fix it Thanks guys for the help. If anyone has anymore ideas please keep them coming. thanks again

Ok, I just went out and half disassembled my pump to be sure YES, once that plug is removed from the AFC, you can push the pin from behind. There will actually be a piece of the AFC linkage visible when you pull the plug. Push on that with a VERY CLEAN instrument and out will pop the pin. The plug exposes the internals of the pump so don't let anything get in there! The throttle linkage does have to come off and there's an index you'll have to remember so that it's on the proper spline when you re-assemble. If you're tired out for the day, leave it overnight. The throttle linkage isn't difficult, but it does take some patience. Now I've gotta go put mine back together before it rains again
