IMO dana axles are among the least friendly axle to set up gears in. That is purely because of the carrier shim design(under the bearings). Setting up gears isn't rocket science though. With good service information and a lot of patience(and maybe a couple tips) you could probably get through it. Set up tools help but generally aren't really needed if the axle has properly set up gears to start with.
Bottom line you know your abilities far better than I do if you can generally follow(and understand) technical directions and are familiar with mechanical operations you can probably get it.

A 90 diesel w/auto (3 speed 727 trans) should have come w/3.07 gears from factory. These axles are Dana 61 and 71 series. They differ from the 60/70 series in pinion offset to accomodate a larger pinion gear. If you have 4.10's w/ the 3 speed topend would be very low.
it might be easier to find someone looking to swap axles, setting the pinion depth is a chore and must be precise, the ring gear backlash isnt too bad except for the weight of the carrier, taking it out and putting it back in checking clearances is exercise, the side bearings hve shims to move the carrier in or out, i have a bearing set i ground out the id so they slip on, you can change out shims to your correct clearance, then press the new bearing on with the correct shims for correct backlash, if you dont do it regularly, it is a lot of work. i have a 307 front, and am looking for a 3:54 or 4:10 front.
