Question Pyrometer

Before I mount my turbo, Where is the best place to drill for pyrometer?
Im the manifold or in the downpipe.
Why is one better than other.
Every semi truck (which is alot- truck mechanic) I've seen they are located in the downpipe.

Manifold, gives a more accurate reading. Down pipe can be 200-300 degrees off. Drill on the firewall side of the divider in the manifold.

Sounds good thanks guys.
Anybody know if 94-98 exhaust manifold is better than a 1st gen. 24 valve manifolds are round port correct.

To answer a few questions.
You want to measure the highest temperatures so you do not melt your pistons accidentally. Since the turbo draws its boost from the exhaust heat, doing so will lower the exhaust temperatures considerably. So is better to mount it pre-turbo (in the manifold).
The 94-98 manifolds are different... im not sure if it will fit.
As far as taping, it depends on the sending unit, some are 1/4" some are 3/8" and it is pipe thread. I don't recommend running the tap all the way down, so that way you can make the bottom piece nice and tight. Mine and the tap has same taper(self sealing threads).
