Problems wth the Pump,...

It seems to be adjusting by itself. I am getting more and more smoke. So I back off he fuel screw a little and it is good for a couple of weeks, and it slowly starts smoking again. Even at low rpms, it is almost embarrasing.

But the thing is when I get more smoke, I don't get more power. It seems to be loosing power.

The pump is a VE, with a Smokey Power Pin, and minor adjustments to the star wheel, and a 3200 RPM Gvenor spring.

Any thoughts..?

Timing slipping? Bad injectors? Bad turbo?

I had a similar problem after a 2000 mile road trip where I was running 5% WMO. I dumped a bottle of Diesel Kleen in the tank and filled up with fresh fuel and changed the fuel filter. It started clearing up within a few miles. I figure it was dirty and/or weak injectors (260K miles on them).

Thats the way mine was acting when it was on its last leg. Do you have trouble starting when hot/operating temp?

Check the fuel filter, then move down the line

Turbo or something restricting the turbo would be My first guess then I would start checking the fuel system. Now if You change it and then comes back to the same You could mark where You make the changes and see if there is any movement from this parts when it is smoking again.

Thanks for the input,.

I dont think it is the turbo, I still get the same boost numbers, it spools up real nice, and there is no play or problem with the wheel. Plus I would think I would be loosing boost, no matter what the fuel. It seems like I get more power when I turn the pump back a little. This is the 3rd time going throught this.

I have been running some WMO through it but even when I run straight Diesel it doesnt clear up till I turn down the fuel screw.

I have no problem starting it at all, hot or cold, fires right up on about 1/2 of a crank, just like a Cummins is supposed to do.

The timing is bumped about 1/8th inch but dont know if it is slipping of how that could happen, now would I look for that?

My gut feeling is the injectors, they may be getting bad (only hade aobut 25K on them) and may be getting weak and popping early, then I turn down the pump and lower the fuel that they are getting, and they are ok for a while then start opening earlier.

Does this make sense?

What percentage WMO are you running?

I was running 5 - 7% on my trip. I'm now running about 20% after I let 1/2 the tank of clean fuel / additive run through the motor, and did some tweaks to the VE (3200 spring, star wheel, fuel pin and full fuel screw). I've started noticing a little drop off in power since I added the WMO, so I think it's the injectors getting dirty. I'm probably going to do the piston pump install this weekend, plus 2 micron filter. We'll see what that does to things.

I've read on other forums about WVO and SVO that even with small percentages of veggie in your fuel mix you need to advance your timing or you'll loose power.

Could that be where you've
"started noticing a little drop off in power since I added the WMO" ??

Just a thought...
