power steering pump troubles

ok 1st off this truck has been very much of a challenge..1st reman steering pump worked great but leaked around the reservoir so defect exchanged that one for another and it wouldnt pump any fluid at all..figured it didnt work right so got another and installed tonight and same thing wouldnt pump at all..removed the pressure line with engine running and no pressure...removed the return line and no pressure..when i bolted it up i lined up the lugs on the inside of the vacuum pump which turned when i rotated the gear...im baffled..will it slide up snug with the lugs not engaged?...if the shaft on the vacuum pump went bad would the inside coupler still turn?.... looking for ideas as i will be taking it off again after work tomorrow..thanks for the help

Did you lose the little drive coupler somewhere? Looks kinda like a washer but has a cross-shaped hole in the middle.

no it is all there at work i thought all day about coupler perhaps not connecting with pump..came home removed vacuum pump again and turned by hand and heard the pump making noise so reinstalled and called a buddy that runs a shop close..he said the diesels idle to slow to prime the pump so rev it and see if that works...i felt about 2 in tall when it sucked all the fluid down like it was supposed to...1st pump activated as soon as i started engine so shes up and going again..now to find the frond end wobble and get that fixed..ahh the joys of owning an antique..lol thanks for the advice

I had to replace my steering box because it wore out. I installed it then filled the resevor up and started the truck reved it and it sucked it down, so I added a bit more until it was full. All was good.

Went 50 ft and had no power steering unless over 2000 rpm, and the fluid looked foamed, no leaks anywhere...Guess the pump took a crap.???

It sounds like you have air in your system, foam was the first clue you can get an air lock in anything hydraulic and it will cease to pump.

Jack up the front of the truck and with the engine running at about 1000 RPM cycle the steering wheel from left to right lock to lock about a dozen times and refill the reservoir as needed. If it has air in the system it will also make a moaning sound when you turn the wheel.

Or you could have a bad pump.

I drove it around town for about 10 minutes, WOW was that fun to turn. I swapped on a new pump and that solved it. I have a new thread with a new problem...........
