Power steering

My power steering unit is leaking like a strainer and I've haven't been able to tell specifically where it's coming from. Aside from leaking it works fine and so my question is have any of you purchased the seal repair kit and had sucess? How hard was it to install the seals, I don't mind wrenchin but at the same time I'm not the best mechanic in the world and am wondering if I'd be better off just getting a reman. If I can save the cash on sealing it myself I can use the cash to buy new front springs as long as none of ya tell my wife

When I bought my truck my buddy picked it up for me and on the phone he said that the PS pump was the only thing leaking. I told him to buy it for me, then it sat for a few weeks until I got back to town and went to fix it.

Well, I got a seal kit and then started ripping the thing apart... Then realized that only the PS line was leaking.

So I just replaced the line that went from the pump to the steering column- 20 bucks from Kragen.

Of course I also realized while I was down there that the steering column was leaking as well. But that fixed itself through the liberal consumption of PS Stop Leak.

So no more leaks for me!

I'll prolly get beat down for this....my steering box leaks like a sieve. Pint a week, maybe more. All down the side of the truck. Didn't use the dipstick...just waited for the groan then put more in. Ran out of PS fluid, switched to tractor fluid and it worked well...still peed down the side of the truck. Ran out of tranny fluid. Started groaning real bad (let it go for a day ) so I tossed some USED 5-30 from her grand cherokee in there...filled it right up, matter of fact Hasn't leaked a drop in 3 weeks...who'd a thunk it? Come winter, I'll be hating life, I'm sure.

Well I haven't really 'looked' to see exactly where it's leaking but since I just bought the thing and the PO said it was the seals in the pump. I took his word for it since he seemed straight forward about things. Long story short the leak is getting a LOT worse. I'm filling it daily now and I'm using 80w gear lube It'll empty the entire amount in the course of a day so guess I need to see if I can figure out where it's leaking and make sure it's not a line.

Still curious if it is seals how big a deal it is to pull everything apart and slap seals in it. If I'm looking at a couple of hours for someone that knows what their doing I'll just spend the $60 and swap the unit.

That's exactly what happened to me. Everybody takes somebody elses word and you end up a million dollars in debt over a library book. Long story short, it's always a good idea to check to see where the leak is coming from. A hose is an hour start-to-finish.

Of course, mine emptied itself about once a week rather than once a day, but who knows?

And since I managed to get away without rebuilding the pump, I have no idea how to rebuild one of them.

douse it with brake cleaner then have someone start it and run the wheel so you can watch everything to see where the leak originates...it's the only way to know for sure.

ALot of times the input shaft is scored. Forget the seal kit and replace the thing if it really is the pump leaking.
