Took my truck for it`s annual safety and emissions inspection today. I was kinda worried that it would`nt pass the snap opacity test that NY uses for emissions testing but lo and behold the old girl passed...with flying colors! They run three snaps on the throttle and average them out with max opacity being 40%, my truck averaged out at 1.42%!(yes, thats one point four two percent) The only thing I did to "help" her along was a 1/8 in. timing bump (wich was needed anyway...really cut down the idle haze to almost none). I`m running fairly tame pump tweaks, fuel screw in about 1.5, AFC turned to max, starwheel about 1/3 down, smoke screw untouched. What a relief !

 

Chris, do you do the test, or does the operator? Here is AZ, we do our own. If you add the 3200 GS, you may have a higher percentage.

 

do you have to "snap it" to max rpm? so if you were to crank the rpm gov screw in to trick the guy in thinking you maxed out on travel it would be easier to pass right?

 

Just make sure you leave that AFC lever alone. No way I'd pass that. I can get an inky black puff just by blipping the throttle a little.

 

Fred, The inspector does the snap, and I have to say he was conservative meaning he could have floorboarded it but he ran the rpm`s up "smartly" instead of just mashing the pedal. There is a spec apparently on the rpm rise time, i.e. you have to attain a certain rpm in a given time frame but I`m not sure what that spec is.

Underpsi, according the printout/reciept I got he snapped the engine to about 1800-1900,so I don`t think they are required to hit the govenor. I`m going to do some digging and see if I can`t find the exact procdure. As far as playing with the high speed stop screw, sure you could adjust it and I suppose as long as the engine hit whatever "target" rpm they want to see it would be all good. FWIW I was thinking along those lines myself and was toying with the idea of loosening the adjustment on the throttle linkage rod, but alas lazyness kicked in and i figured I`d wing it.

Funny thing is, I am a New York State licensed motor vehicle inspector myself (I turn wrenches for a living) and this was the first time 20 years someone other than myself inspected any vehicle I have owned Reason i did`nt do it myself is because we don`t have a diesel opacity tester at my dealer (Toyota...MAYBE soon tho we will see what the `07 Tundra comes with, I`m hoping a Hino).

 

thanks for the info guys, Ya the emissions thing is the only thing holding me back from grinding my afc lever. I might just try to remove the whole lever so I am able to put it back if i needed to do the e test

isnt it just hellishly ironic that i live in Kalifornia of all places where all diesel automobiles are smog exempt?!

who'da thunk it?

my last gasser failed as a gross polluter by double the limit! no smog is was a BIG reason why i went diesel.

2 counties in AZ require it, but you do the test, not the operator. They tell you to floor it and hold it for about 3-5 seconds, there is a screen to watch, and it tells you what to do. They do this about 5 times, and your done.
