Piston lift pump upgrade help

I have read many threads on this and am a bit confused on what pumps work.

I have Delphi part number HFP702 and HFP700. I can not find a thread that tells what the difference is in the two. I think I read the 700 has the same pressure as the OEM diaphragm pump and the 702 is more but not over what the VE can handle something less than 15psi.

Then Cummins part numbers 3936320 and 4988751 are apparently the same pump with an updated part number.

I see these Cummins clones for $25 to $50 on Ebay. Are the the correct pumps? Sure bets over $100 for a Delphi unit or over $200 for a genuine Cummins unit.

Thanks!

Grant, I want to make this easy and troublesome for you. There’s been part numbers superceeded over the years, and with us first genders realizing the benefits of this pump, we have made the mistakes by buying and installing ones made for the second genners. Their pumps have way too much pressure for ours, and some folks have learned that the hard way.

To top it off, the overseas manufacturers have started producing these, and flooding amazon and eBay with these offerings, only to end up in the hands of us firstgenners and causing all sorts of problems.

Do yourself a trouble free favor, and go to either dieseltuff.com or hungrydiesel.com and buy the piston pumps advertised in their firstgen sections. Their versions have already been “throttled down” to put out the correct pressures that our VE pump needs, and their kits include everything you need to complete the job.

Too many posts on here of folks cobbling up the parts one by one, only to have problematic failures which have led to removing and resealing their VE pumps, and outright spending more money in the long run cause after they learned which pumps were the correct ones, they pretty much spent double to get it correct. Trust me on this one

Is the kit from Oregon Ok? There is a large price difference between their kit and the others.

Even just the price of the lift pump they sell is much cheaper.
The quality of it is a concern for me as well. I was thinking about ordering a complete set up from the hungry diesel for Poncho.
I don't mind saving money, but if the quality of that lift pump is suspect, I will gladly spend the extra cash.

I checked with Case- International. the pump is the same part number if that means anything. Maybe get one from case.

I ordered the kit from THD. He claims that it is reworked to push 25% more volume than the stock Cummins low pressure lift pump. The kit was all Cummins parts and seems to work just fine. He had a Black Friday deal on it last year that I couldn't pass up. It included the pump kit, 366 spring, and THD fuel pin for less than the kit usually sells for by itself. I bought the 15psi pump.

I bought the fuel heater delete nipple from a Case dealer for about 1/3 the price that Cummins was asking. Same part number.

I have been running their kit for close to 8 years now, and probably over 100K miles, no issues what so ever. Still pumping out 8-10 psi at idle and around 10-12psi at WOT.

Piston lift pump

Anyone know if the kit now has the correct pump to filter tube ? I purchased a kit many years ago and it had incorrect tube . I made mine from hydraulic hose and JIC fittings

The THD kit fit perfectly if that is the one you're asking about.

I've been using the pump from OFI for years and the pump does push over 8psi pressure or more even when working it hard.

FWIW, the Cummins pump I bought from THD had a made in China sticker on it. I called the local Cummins dealer to make sure it was an OEM part and they confirmed made in China to Cummins specifications.

OK. First read this thread: https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...l-help-329063/

Then save yourself a whole lot of grief and buy this pump: HVLP low pressure piston lift pump for 89-93 Cummins

Further down he has a listing for the Kit you'll need to install the pump.

Otherwise you could wind up with 3 gallons of oil mixed with 5 gallons of fuel in your crankcase.

I concur with bigragu & edwinsmith; buy the kit from DieselTuff, he will include a spring that is perfectly matched to the piston pump bore, that is safe and won't lose pressure over time.

grant - yes, the kits include the correct tube.
