overdrive problem?

hey, i just bought a 1993 ext cab dually, when the truck is cold it takes forever to go into overdrive, when it gets warmer like after half hour of driving it will jump from od to drive with little movement of fuel pedal. once its been shut down and started later in the day seems to shift ok but it jumps out of od sometimes. the sticker under the hood say it has 3.50 gears, but at about 100km/h it tops out. what kind of gears you think be in it? let me know any advice will help alot. thanks chris. and im a proud 1st gen owner! cheers.

It sounds like you have a bad tps sensor.

The sensor might not necessarily be bad, as it could simply be just out of adjustment.

I had a similar issue, and I adjusted the TPS. It's located on the top of the injector pump towards the radiator. There's adjustment procedures in the sticky and it's done with a simple OHM meter. Take about 5 minutes to dial it in, and determine if it's bad or simply just not adjusted properly.

I adjusted mine, and haven't had one iota of problems since. During the adjustment procedure, the specs will tell you if it's bad, or just not set to proper spec. IF it's indeed bad, you will have to replace it, and adjust the new one in the same manner.

In order for the tranny to go in to OD, it must be above 33°. Now, I'm not sure if that temperature is inside the housing, (meaning the oil temp) or outside ambient temperature. That may sound dumb, outside ambient, but keep in mind that's whatever ambient temperature is, minus windchill at 100 kph, (or whatever.)
I don't know what sort of temperatures you're seeing at the moment, but it's possible the tranny is just not warm enough, hence later in the day it works ok.

I never knew the tranny was "temp sensitive"

There are several good sticky's on how to manually control where the overdrive works

Adjustment procedure is in there too

It's possible the temperature sender is bad.

I'm trying to remember where I read that. I'm sure it was on here somewhere. I'll post it if I find it.
