Oil problem

In my 92 I noticed the gauge with the little oil can was up pretty high. Honestly not sure if that's Temp or pressure. I was thinking it was pressure cause it moved with RPM's butr my buddy was telling me it's temp. Ither way it was high. I went to lunch and on the way back I smelled something like burning tar, but didn't pay it no mind cause their taring the roof of the next building over. On the way back to the barracks my buddy followed and let me know that the tar smell was me. I don't smoke going down the road, my EGT's are under 300 at 55 and never over 500 when taking off and getting to speed. I can't think of anything. I did changed the oil about 2000 miles ago and it still looks great. Only thing I noticed is that it was a bit high on the stick. I've always added a little more than called for in my cars tho. I'm not leaking oil from anywhere. Didn't see any coolant on the stick when I checked. I'm gonna let it cool and go look. I aint got a clue. When I start it gauge goes straight to the 3/4 mark and stays just under it till I start down the road then it moves with RPM. Bounce out some ideas, I need it.

I don't know what that gauge reads but I would bet it is pressure like any other truck, regardless to have an actual reading You need a REAL gauge, the burning smell could be a number of things like the transmission if You have a stick maybe it ran out of oil and You are running it dry.
When filling it, is better to just pour the necessary amount not more, this can cause it to start burning the extra amount of oil.
500f egt's is hardly anything to consider, is You gauge probe on the manifold?
Hope You find the problem.

I for one have never seen a factory installed oil temperature gauge in any 89-93 Dodge Cummins trucks. The normal talk on here is how the factory gauge sometimes fail and are not that accurate. You are talking about the factory instrument/gauge cluster?

Check your exhaust pipe clearance or for something stuck on it. The last time I smelled something like this it was a piece of sound deadener that fell on the exhaust pipe on an older Dodge gasser truck.

The EGT probe it on the down pipe right after the turbo. The guage is in the stock cluster. im gonna go check the trans.. I'm game for anythimg that might work.

Sorry for the blurry picture but it's the best I got and it's off my cell phone. This is at idle.

After I drained out some oil and not the stick reads center of the safe zone.

I about forgot. I found a leak on the injection pump while I was under it. Kinda not a good think. Drip............Drip............Drip and so on. about 2 to 3 seconds between drips. far as I can tell it just started cause the small spot on the deck wasnt there when I was under it before I started it.

That's your oil pressure gauge....not an oil "temp" gauge.

You want it to be up there....., but mine runs in the middle as well.

What weight oil are you running ?

Your oil pressure gauge from the pic looks normal to me. But if your oil has been coming up lately than maybe your diaphram on your lift pump broke and is dumping fuel into your oil. Or the front seal of the VE could have gone bad and is leaking fuel into the crankcase. Have you checked your coolant?

I check the coolant and it's a nice green. The guage normally ran right dead center like it did on the way home today. I do have a slight leak from the pump but so very small. I see one or 2 drops after it sat all night. To enclude ideling every morning to warm up. I don't know guys. it ran fine on the way home. I'm thinking I got something in there that blocked or partialy blocked a passage somewhere.

The fuel leak isn't a big deal except for the fuel that its being wasted, You should read the sticky thread on top about re sealing the VE, depending on your skills this is something you can do yourself or have a good Bosch shop do for You.

You Need a oil pressure gauge or its all in the air to determine the real problem, your gauge looks normal and the smell could be totally unrelated.

I thought I had gotten lucky but it's back now. I went to get some dinner and at 55MPH roughly 1800RPM I sit between the 3/4 and the last mark on the guage. I'm not the brightest little greese monkey but I'm pretty sure it aint supposed to be that high. I'll go her a small little guage this weekend and sling it in next week some time. I don't smell nothing going down the road nor stopped. Maybe that was a one time thing. I'm lost in the sauce on this yall.

I'm confused....... I know he said I need to get a oil pressure guage and I'm getting one this weekend. I'm hoping to find a couple ideas that may help for the time being. I thought about it on the way home tonight. I'm gonna drain the oil and put a air hose at the drain plug and take the cap off and try to see if I can't blow out what ever is in there. I think something's stuck in a passage. Only thing that makes since to me. Yall have some good idea's beside the guage, Already gonna do that one.

The factory gauge isn't worth the plastic it's molded in. Mine would swing back and forth like a hypnotist's watch on occasion. The sender is notoriously junky. That's why I have an aftermarket gauge now.

That said your oil pressure is likely just fine. Make sure your oil level is in the safe zone and not going up or down. Then get a real gauge on it to verify what the actual pressure is.

Realistically, the CTD is pretty tough and can take quite a bit of abuse. I've cold started mine at -30* and waited a full minute for oil pressure to come up. Only to hit the road 10 mins later and have 75-80psi oil pressure while running at 1500rpm. I've also dealt with a leaking VE front seal that thinned my oil out enough that neither of my gauges would register oil pressure at idle and would only hold 25-30psi at highway speed.

Get a gauge and see where you are at.

I got a Sun Pro guage this morning. I'm gonna give the truck an hour to cool and try to jump on that. I can't find a Hanes or chilton book on our trucks so can someone tell me where oil psi sender is? Maybe point me in the right direction of a link that will show me where all the sensors and senders are? I would appriciate it. Thanks guys.
