NV4500 and a NP205
got a question regarding oil which I think I know the answer to but want to confirm.
With the np205 being married to a nv4500, the rear seal is gone which means they share the oil. When running the nv4500 a quart over full it appears it will be over the fill plug of the np205.
So I’m assuming that running the transfer case over full is ok and you only check the fluid level on the transmission during maintenance

I have a seal in my adapter between the NV4500 and NP205. Since my 205 started life as a 23 spline and then converted to 29 spline there was only enough material to have one seal....OEM units have a double seal, two back to back. I have the Castrol Syntorque in my NV4500 and 80W90 in the NP205.

I made sure it would not be an issue with my NV-4500 I put into my black crew cab by filling my NP-205 with the Syntorque as well.
That way if they do swap a little spit, there is no issue with the syncros in the NV-4500.

The seal I was mentioning is on the input shaft on the adapter of the NP205, not in the tailshaft assembly on the NV4500. You may need an extra quart due to some fluid filling into the adapter.

That’s going to be my plan as well, haven’t ran a nv4500 in years. I doubt the syntorque has got any cheaper lol

Swapin Oils
I have both laying on the floor in my shop readying to install after overhaul . The stated answer is 100% correct , the adapter 1/2 attached to the 205 has a double face seal or 2 seals back to back . When installed correctly it prevents oil swaping from the 2 . Syntorque in both would be good to insure no damage , but it’s **** expensive over the price of the correct seal. Not sure the best way to maintain overfill on the 4500 , I installed a couple of fittings to raise the fill level , but I filled through the shifter hole until it came out the fittings . We’ ll See in the future how it is to maintain over fill through the fittings . I can send images if needed on seals .

Thanks Dave, I did put a new seal in the transfer case when I rebuilt it, I guess I didn’t realize it was a 2 way seal. I should be good

I hate to butt into this thread with a question, but can you guys put pictures of how the transfer case shift linkage is setup? I’ve been scratching my head on how to make it work since the linkage is normally on the driver’s side on a nv4500.

'93,
I can not load pictures on here, but I bet if I typed in "NV-4500 NP-205 picture" on a search on my computer, I would be looking at pictures of it really quickly.
Or go to Advanced Adapters web sight and look at the cheesy version they sell.

NV4500 NP205 shifter
My nv4500 shifter is mounted with three bolts to pass side of the nv4500 . It has a straight rod with the Goofy Dodge adjustment and bushings , not much . While mine was out I drilled the tie bar on the np205 to 1/2 inch . After that t took the shifter apart and removed the spring and washers . I made a nylon bushing for a spacer , tightened the nut back on to the shaft with the bushing . Then I installed 2 , 1/2 in heim joints with a threaded 1/2 in rod between shifter and transfer case . It works fine as wine no rattles .
