NP205 shifter noise at highway speed!

I have the NP205 T/C and the shifter vibrates very loudly at highway speeds. When I grab the T/C shifter the noise goes away. Has anyone else encountered this problem? I took the boot off and can't tell if everthing is ok or not. Are there nylon washers or bushings that are supposed to be on the throw rods / shifter? Any suggestions?

All of the 205s I have owned do the same thing. Have had some luck placing spring washers on the rods then putting a flat washer on the other side and forcing the cotter pin thru the hole. Someone even suggested putting silicone on the shifter pivot, though I did not do it. I also put a piece of foam insulation over the shifter, the kind a refrigeration tech uses not the split kind found at Home Depot. The foam does dampen some of the noise.

yeah I get some of that too. If I can get it into the right position, it quiets down.

Same here, a mysterious creature the 205...I just wedge a jacket over it to calm her noises.

Find some thick black rubber hose such as hydraulic hose and cut to length. Slice lengthwise and wrap around. Helps to reduce vibration and unnoticable unless your looking.

I used a 15 inch long turnbuckle with jam nuts at each end to connect the shifter to the bar that links the rods. No noise.

Mine has served double duty to hold one of my insulated leather gloves over the top of it. Solves the problem of the noise and keeps me from loosing at least one of my gloves.

A pair of black wool socks over it might work to. You will always have a dry pair that way lol.

The most common fix is to drop a roll of Duct tape over the shifter...
or take an old garden hose, cut to length and split, place over the linkage rod and zip tie it closed...

I do the old work gloves routine. I have one shoved inside another and placed over the shifter. Seems to work fine, and I have no noticeable noise.

My knit hat almost covers the noise.

When I bought my truck the shifter was hitting the floor, so I took it apart and tweaked the shifter some and now its quiet.... no problems at all. But all the poly bushings in my shifter looked almost new - I was told it was recently rebuilt when I bought the truck- whatever that meant - I never got any paperwork on it from the previous owner.

4RnrRick, What poly bushings?

DumpTruck200, I just can't seem to picture that in my head? Do you have pictures?

Thanks for all the input,
Joseph

Here's the TC end of that turnbuckle I mentioned, Angelfire.
The other end connected to the shifter is just like this except the threads are right hand so that the center link of the turnbuckle spreads the two ends apart when you turn it in one direction and pull the ends together turning it in the other direction. The jam nuts hold the center link setting.
The turnbuckle takes out a lot of the springiness of the OEM shifter linkage.

I just remembered; I also bought a poly bushing kit for the TC mounting plate.
That quieted it down a lot.

This may sound silly but my shifter used to rattle and the case whined real loud. I have since changed to Royal Purple 85-140 gear oil and it is totally quiet now.
