Non i/c VE to i/c

First off, sorry for yet another IP thread ,but I think this may get my truck to running good again. Now for a couple of quick questions,

1. I pulled this pump off my '89 and for some reason didnt bother to set it to tdc. Is there a chance I will be 180 off or can i just turn it to match the keyway in the gear?

2. Im swapping the delivery valve holders off my trashed "reman" pump to the '89 pump. Do i need to keep the i/c stuff together or just swap the theaded pieces.

3.I saw a thread about a pump shop in Mendenhall,MS called mylex or something. Supposedly they do a good job and they will also replace the h&r which didn't get replaced on the pump I just bought. Is this a good place to do business with or should I look else where.

I really hope this fixes my truck because out of the 35k miles Ive owned it,its only ran great for 200 miles of those. Again sorry for the rant type attitude but im getting aggrivated at the whole situation. On a more cheerful note, I do appreciate all the help ive gotten so far from everybody.

1. Match the key way up. It will get you close enough to run.

2. You have to swap everything, IC delivery valves are different than non-IC delivery valves.

3. No idea.

Keep the valves and springs and everything together when doing the DV swap.

And swap the KSB over too as they work differently...

Its hard to explain. When I first put it on i could run 70-75 up and down hills all day long with little effort, but it had a dead spot b/w idle and 1200rpm that wasn't turbo lag. Then I drove it to town on a 100f day and it lost all power and would hardly idle. Since then the engine is choppy, noisy, blows white smoke sometimes and it takes a lot of pedal to get it over 1700 rpm going down the road, it also surges at low speeds. The engine in the '89 ran flawlessly and idled smooth as glass so im going to swap the pump over and see what happens.

Sounds like an air leak somewhere.

I would look at the fuel filter first and the lift pump second. And also look for air leaks on the suction side. Sounds exactly like what my truck did when the lift pump went bad. Look and see if your oil smells like fuel.

Thanks for the ideas. I replaced the lp with a napa one when I did the ip, and I changed the ff last week. Tomorrow i'm going to run new fuel line from the lp pump to the tank and change the ff again to see what it does.

It might be a good idea to verify your fuel pressure with a gauge before you eliminate the lift pump as a possible cause. A couple years ago I put a new LP on a first gen that only lasted a week before losing all pressure. It's rare but it does happen.

I would do some more checking before I threw another pump on. The guys above have good places to start. I had a bunch of crud on my pick up basket in the tank when I first got this single cab. It had some of those symptoms. But with you saying white smoke sounds like it's sucking air into supply side.
Whens the last time you adjusted the valves?

I fixed my problem. I went through and checked everything, even ran new line from the tank to the lp. It turned out it was the VE and I'm surprised it even ran. Heres a list of what was wrong.

3 out of 6 of the springs in the dv holders were broken.

Those two big springs inside were broken.

The case looked like someone tried to hone it out. There were deep scores in it. Whether it was from me or not I do not know.

Theres what looks like a little piston in there that's stuck in its bore. And again more scoring.

It has a 366 spring in it. That's a plus I guess.

The cam plate was turned blue somehow and showed wear.

The power screw has the collar missing so it may have been maxed at one time.

The truck runs great now. Thanks for all the suggestions.
