NOISE! reman getrag or new sb conofe???

hey everyone! well, id like to be really excited right now because i now have a brand new clutch and remaned getrag in my truck but im getting quite a bit of noise when i release the clutch in neutral and also in 4th gear. the tranny shifts really tight right now, is that normal for a break in period maybe? i figured it would be different from the old one with 260000 miles on it but i was hoping for a smoother shift. so what do you guys think? where should i start, or should i give it some time to settle in? TIA

Where is the noise coming form. Can you differentiate between where you think the noise is coming form? Can you feel it in the shifter? Where /who rebuilt the trans? Throw out bearing replaced?

You did not forget to put oil in the trans? (not dissin you, but I did that one time) Have to ask.

Did you replace the pilot bushing? I know that lots of people recommend having the flywheel machined to accept a bearing. When I first changed my clutch, I thought that the bushing looked good ( the idiot gasser mechanic in me I guess ). It resulted in real tight shifting and got to a point where I had to use 2 hands to get it into gear. I thought I was going to break the shifter. Just a thought...Mark

as far as the clutch goes the whole thing came as a set, new flywheel pressure plate, TO bearing and all. the getrag is from transgear, it has a 12 month unlimited mile warranty. i cant really tell exactly where the noise is coming from though. it does sort of come from the bell housing, i think...

Again, a stupid question, the pilot bushing (at least) or bearing is mounted in the flywheel, did they replace it?. I ask because your symptoms could be from a bad pilot bushing (bearing).Any pics? The second time i pulled mine, the pilot bushing fell out into my hand. If is is the bushing, I believe that it will make it to SD and you can fix it there, IMHO, of course. I ran mine like that for 4 or 5 months, untill I could no longer get it into reverse..Mark By the way, San Diego is Soooooooooo worth the effort Mark

Another suggestion, If you shut it down, does it shift smoothly through the gears? If so, it means that there may be axial movement on the input shaft caused by a bad pilot bushing/bearing, when she's running...Mark

yeah the new flywheel had a pilot bearing already pressed in it. what happened is this...i rebuilt my engine top to bottom and while i was at it i put in a new southbend clutch. the alignment tool worked as it was supposed to, i got everything together and with the help of some friends was able to line it up on the input shaft and bolt her up. the clutch came with new EVERYTHING right down to the bolts that hold the pressure plate to the flywheel. soo everything went well and ran great except my tranny was still og. it had always slipped out of 5th on the highway if i let off the throttle but that was it. so when i started my journey back home to SD i felt pretty good. about 500 miles in to the trip it started making a TICK TICK TICK noise mostly in 5th but still faint in the rest. 800 miles in i pulled off an exit to visit my friend in cincinatti and all hell broke loose in my tranny. it ground its way in to 2nd and when i let off the clutch it made an awful grinding noise. now with the new getrag it feels tight which im ok with. it feels GREAT on the highway now! it doesnt slip out of 5th and its quiet, except in 4th and neutral...sorry i just realized how long this post was...

I would say that if its running fine in all the other gears, it would have to be in the trans. Sounds I know are hard to describe online. My first thought was the TO bearing, as all new is not always ok.

Did you overiflll the trans by a quart?

You should verify that the tranny shop didn't put 90 wt in it anyway. Sounds like they set the pre load a little too tight, it is a very small dimension like .002 or something, my tranny guy could not believe it was that loose, but that is what rags need.

yeah they definitely put the right stuff, kendall d 5w30 syn blend. it was actually a truck repair shop that did it for me. the yard had 3 or 4 other dodges in it along with about 40 big rigs. how do you change the preload on the rag? i wasnt there for the installation of it but i was told it comes totally assembled. i just drove it around for a bit after adding an extra quart and it seems like it is starting to quiet down a bit, maybe it just needs a few miles to settle in. thats what im hoping anyway.

The preload is changed with shims under the rear cover.

I would drive it for a while.....see what happens. If you start having trouble , maybe take it back and see if they will re do it or at least look at it. OR, you could take it bac to them now so they know there might be a problem with it....

Something no one has said yet. A Con-OFE is a noisey clutch. SBC says the noise will go away around 500 miles. Don't believe that. Mine still makes noise at 5k on it. It has quitened down quite a bit. It still make noises.
