no speedo
Ok so my o/d quit working along with my speedo and after reading (mainly posts on here) i learned that if the speedo doesnt work it wont shift into o/d.So i did all the tests from the thread ''fixing the O/D lockout module'' then i changed the vss,and still no speedo.I havn't tried the jumper wire for overdrive because i want my speedo workin again.my question, is there a way to check the vss to make sure its making a signal for the PCM to read,so that i know the gear that drives the vss(inside the tailshaft housing)is good?
And what else could keep the speedo from working?

put the truck on jackstands, get someone to run it at low speed with vss removed partially, look to see if it spins with load, also look for deformity in driven gear bore(where vss mates to)

(astro)yes it does. when I changed the vss i put the L-shaped adapter on the drive gear part and spun it by hand to make sure it was turning the square hole piece that drives the vss and it was so best i can tell i'm good ther.

having same problem?? speedo went out late last year, put new one on and it wrks 1 month later stops wrking everything attached to speedo sensor is good? while driving it o/d will kick in but no speedo this happens randomly, sometimes my speedo will work and my wait to start light and water in fuel light will flash or stay solid, sometimes when i hit the brake wait to start light will come on then when i let off the light goes off??? these are all random problems but definelty dont have speedo or o/d...was thinken ground or ecu???please help

I found out with mine is you dont tighten the part that goes in the transfer case it needs to be loose ( not FALLING OFF LOOSE ) just then mine works fine it wierd try it. Because it did it to me when i was pulling a trailer and NO O/D sucks

leaving the gear reducer on loose is what will wear the shaft and bore out there are lots of things at play here . your speedo could be out. or ECM bad VSS bad ,bad connection at vss or speedo, bad ground broken wire you need to inspect all parts and make sure there working . my 90 turned out to be the VSS my sons 91 was the reducer was bad were the pin turned in the bore and his VSS was working intermittent . 20 +- years on the wires needs looking at for rubbed spots or bad connections.
the VSS can be had at NAPA the reducers are still available at the dealer with limited ratios. you will need to give them your trans type ,tire size ,axle ratio,

Pulled the truck out for some diagnoises...turned the key waited for the wait to start light and water in fuel light to go out and it did?? started truck after a min of running lights started flashing and flickering on and off, turned the truck off and disconnected the 4 small wires on the relays for the grid and walla the light problem was fixed...well maybe not, went for a drive and the speedo was workin and so was overdrive???COOL? 2 miles down the road the speedo startin goin in and out and obviously no overdrive..hmmm, put my foot on the brake enough for the brake light sensor was disengaged, and the speedo and overdrive started workin...I pulled out the sensor by the pedal enough that it was not making contact with switch, with this done every works as it should, besides my brake lights are on...HMMM THATS AS FAR AS I HAVE MADE IT WITH A FIX//still lookin into it, will post as soon as i know more any help would be great

What is the vss ?
my odometer has been out for years, I took it apart today and founs a tiny gear with some brokenn teeth. I seem to remeber a post here somewhere with info on parts.
