No alternator, but made it home.
When you don't want to leave your truck in South Dallas, you find a solution.
I lean on this forum for info on a regular basis. Reading, listening, and learning from those that have done it before, and others that are just smarter than me. But I have not seen this one, so my turn to share.
Leaving work in SW Dallas yesterday, something popped, started to make a burning smell, and eventually caused the temp to start to rise. Loop 12 South of 30, not the best place to find a place to trouble shoot. Slowed, nursed it a couple of exits, now in SE Irving, but a couple of auto parts shops available. Thinking it was the A/C went in to Advanced, and got a belt to delete the A/C. After following the path, I look at the alt. It won't turn at all. It is toast. No tools, and 30 miles from home, in traffic. Pull the belt, go back in, and get one about 8" shorter. Pickup the water pump, tensioner, fan, and drive belt. Collect refund for smaller belt, fire it up, drive home.
Like I said 25 to 30 miles from where I was to home north of Dallas, with lights on. Big battery and LED headlights help, but you just should not be able to do that without an alternator.
These trucks are crazy, dependable beasts. Not wanting to leaving or where it did not need to be, nor my wife need to bring the kids to this part of town at night, with a little creativity, and believing in this old truck, I got home to do the work needed in the driveway.
080496 - Serpentine Belt - Emergency fix.
Hope this can help someone in the future, just like you all have helped me.

If it was not night time and you needed the headlights you could have driven much further.
