newer cummins swap into a 1st gen.

So I am new to the sight. I have a couple questions. I blew the 12v in my 1993 first gen and been looking at swapping in another motor. I found a 1994 freghtliner with a 5.9 12v with the P-pump. seeing if it would be a easy swap and any red flags i should look for. Input would be appreciated. thanks

It should be fairly simple. You might have to put your 1st gen oil pan on the '94 engine since it may have the larger pan. Thats all I can think of. The rest should be prety strait forward.

Wouldn't the engine adapter plate (bolted to the back of the block) be an SAE spec pattern vs. the dodge specific pattern on the dodge trucks?

Engine Mounts - probably reuse the mounts from the 93

Vacuum Pump - does that engine even have one?

Swap motor mounts and the transmission adapter plate and it'll settle right between the frame rails. The '94 motor probably has an air compressor depending on the truck. Probably only out of an FL-60 or 70 so maybe not. Wouldn't be hard to remove though of course or keep it if you've got the room and use it for an on-board air system. Of course, that would take away some HP from the motor if you're after power.

Minor things like fan hub, a/c compressor and alternator mounting should be looked at. However, if brackets for a different application are needed, you can take the ESN to Cummins and get whatever brackets you want.

Yea when i went to look at the motor the a/c compressor was mounted on top on a bracket and there was an air compressor on it as well. but everything else seemed pretty dead on. the bolt pattern for the bell housing is what is bothering me. Can i use my 93 spacer and bell housing?

I may be wrong here but I think if you have your old engine and all of the brackets and what not then you should be able to bolt all of your stuff on the "new" engine. Yes your old rear plate will bolt up.

Most likely the oil pickup tube and oil pan need to be swapped too.

If it's a front-sump setup, of course. I would think the pan could just be turned around couldn't it?

You know, I never thought of them as reversible. They might be...

should be a easy swap since you should have everything you need. Dont get rid of one single part of the dodge til your finished. The only thing I can think of is the throttle linkage for the p-pump. The freightliner linkage might be adaptable to work, or if not source one from a boneyard p-pump dodge.
