Newbie Performance Question
 

I just got me a '93 3/4 ton 4X4 Cummins on Saturday. The PO installed 40 horse injectors. The smoke screw has also been messed with. From 0-70 I can almost beat my brother's '05 cummins (him with a 6 speed, me with a 5 speed) but when I hook on a trailer, the common rail is far superior. Mine currently has a 3 inch strait pipe, stock turbo and 2700 RPM governor springs.

What does my turbo put out for boost now? Can I increase it any with a different waste gate? Does my current exhaust/stock air filter restrict it any?

Would higher governor springs help any? How far can I go? How hard is it to change them?

What else would give me more power?

If you are doing all this without a boost or egt gauge, I would STOP and do that first. You could be doing some damage without monitoring the temps.

this in answer to every newbie question like this, get GAUGES first! boost and egt at a minimum. this will answer some of the questions u have already, like how much boost u have and where u are fuel wise roughly. i ran a full set of gauges for about 3 months in my stocker before i tweaked anything just to get a good idea of baseline figures. this can help in future troubleshooting and whether u or headed in the right direction too. cant really comment on the rest of the questions cause idk anything about first gens.....[redface]

You should get gauges first. That said the 3200RPM spring made a bigger seat of the pants difference in my 5 speed than my auto. I would recommend that to any manual truck it just makes it more driveable if nothing else, you don't run out of gear so quick with it.

Do I want a pre or post turbo pyro gauge?

Pre turbo is more accurate.

You want pre-turbo...Before the turbo..[roll]

What would be the best range? 0-1600?

What is the max temp I can get to before I need to be worried?

Are Autometer gauges any good?

most you'll want to get at for any duration of time is 1250* and maybe higher for a brief, and i mean brief, period of time. That being said mine is stock and i can flog it all i want and not see over 1150* at WOT. and yes o-1600 works fine if you need to see your truck make over 1600* of heat pre turbo you shouldn't even bother looking at the gauge at that point. I have the glowshift 3in1 and so far i like it but its mixed feedback on here. Autometer and Isspro are the two that most use on here if im not mistaken. someone will chime in otherwise.

I have also seen the 3 in 1 glowshift gauge. Most reviews are horrible and are often called glowsh!t.

I think I will go with a 2 gauge pillar pod. I am looking at this and this.

They look like they will point the gauges too far up. My seat is a little worn and I am a bit short as it is. Will they be pointing at me or over my head? I don't really want to mount them to the dash.

The main reason you can stay with the 06 is the weight difference, probly a ton at least.

the newer truck has double the hp yours does, but you can still tow anything you want just maybe not as fast as the 06.

I have a 3n1 glowshift aswell. It works fine but has a few issues. Great idea just needs some refinements.

His weighs 8300 lbs. I just pulled mine across the scale last night and it weighs 7400 lbs. He has to shift to much. Mine pulls great now but you can't have to much power.

What issues does it have?

Check out Geno's Garage and the autometer gauges they have. They have pods that will probably be the best pillar mounts available right now. Also check the steering colume mount for a single gauge as they fit your '93 as well..........Pyro/boost are a must, after that, your choice (tach, trans.temp.,oil pressure, fuel pressure, there are lots of gauges you can get..........)
