new trany
after driving around for 8 mounths with no first gear and not being abel to shift in to park, i have decided to rebuild my transsmision. what i want to know is what i should ask for when i get it rebuilt. keep in mind that this truck has a trailer hooked to it alot of the time. also how does a rebuild compare to some of the after marked transmsions on the market?

What are you driving? Your signature didn't show on my computer. I'm assuming it is an A518 since the Rag isn't supposed to have a Park. I don't know about your budget but if you are towing I would suggest while the tranny is getting overhauled put in a shift kit designed with towing in mind. Also the stock torque converter is not the best thing Dodge ever did. It has to low an efficientcy rating and it produces a lot of heat under load.

I think I paid about $1200 or so for my Goerend VB and coverter plus the local tranny guy (who is outsourced for the performance diesel trannies around here) $700 for the rebuild. With fluids and everything needed I was only in about 2g.

I have about $3k in just parts in my 47RH after you add everything up. Goerend 3 disc converter, VB, front servo, accumulator piston, billet apply strut/lever, and billet input shaft.

I went through this for my mom's almost 2 years ago. I asked about stall speeds, what they did exactly to the internals to beef them up, or if they used OEM quality (not "stock" as that gives away that you may be into performance) parts. Where do they get their parts? Are they diesel specific? Increasing line pressures? No one could give me a number on stall speed, and few said they did anything above stock for the internals. Some good it did- she went the cheap route ($1200 P&L) and has paid for it at the pump since. Plus, the tranny started shuddering at about 17.5K on a 18K warranty.
CHeaper is rarely better. I'd suggest going with a big name company from these or other DOdge diesel forums, as they care about their reputations, and know more about building a diesel tranny than most gasser local yokel yay-hoos.

if i decide to add more friction discs like bc847 did in his write up can i use the stock retainers for those.

I put in a Transgo Kit and I love it. The truck hauls great, and shifts firm. I do know a converter would help alot. I don't know how good other kits are and won't insist you get a Transgo, just let you know how well mine works.
