ATF Bad for Pwr Steering?
Yeah, I know-- it says in the manual to use only power steering fluid, but I spent all day replacing the steering box mount (it fell apart as soon as it was unbolted... ) and welding the frame, and there was no such fluid handy. Given that this town is only 229 in size, I doubt there is any obtainable here. Anyway, my buddy told me ATF is all that he has ever used in his '93, so I went with it. Seems to work fine, but are there any long-term ills to using it? Thanks for any help,
Chris

As Edwin said you can use ATF and it'll do the trick, however there is the odd fella that will consider anything but legit powersteering fluid to be taboo. If I do recall there is a SLIGHT different in powersteering fluid but not enough to be noticable or show any visable wear.
In my opinion it's just one of those things that is overpriced.

They claim Type F is better for a steering box setup, where Dex/Mer III is better for a rack and pinion setup. Really its just a hydraulic pump, s any type of hydraulic fluid should work.
