I was wondering where to get a good fan clutch for a decent price. I need one but don't want to buy junk and don't want to pay too much for crap. Thanks.

 

The first one I bought was a Haden from Advance Auto. It died within a year. The shaft connecting the bimetalic spring broke. I am still running the one I bought from NAPA with no problems for six months and that included a trip towing 9500 pounds through the hills of West Virginia and Pennsylvania last week. Wish I could say the same for the thermostat. It won't close now.

When ever the clutch is off the truck, always store it in an upright position (don't let it lay on it's face). The fluid with-in can leak out.

 

I believe this to be one of those questions that you ask 10 different people and get 10 different answers. I don't know the answer either, but here's my conclusion... the garage-owner down the road from me and the parts man at the Dodge dealership are fishin' buddies. The garage-owner says the Dodge parts man told him their fan clutches come from Hayden, same as NAPA, Advance, Autozone, etc. I went through 3 to get one good one, all were Hayden, all came from Autozone. I can't help but consider this scenario: Joe buys a new fan clutch from Autozone on Monday, takes it back on Tuesday 'cause it doesn't work. The highly-experienced parts man at Autozone figures it looks like new, so it must be new, and puts it back on the shelf. Jack comes in on Thursday, buys the same fan clutch, and brings it back on Friday... and we start over again. Anybody think possibly a pattern with bad fan clutches. My last one was a fresh order and it works fine. Another 2 cents.

I had heard similiar things on older parts. OEM on new parts controls quality until the car/trucks are out of warrentee and initial parts runs are used up. Then, they buy them from the lowest bidder. Seems completely strange as I've messed with some 40 year old mercedes stuff where the factory parts were different than aftermarket. But, that was not always the case.

I live in Vancouver WA i bought mine at Thirfty Auto on Portland Ore it was 60.00 for a heavyduty. the best part about there open 24hrs

 

Why not us the up dated fan and clutch from mopar.....If's from a 2nt gen but will fit in a intercooled first gen!!

Dodge has issued an updated Fan which has more twist on the blades and is lighter. If you plan on upgrading your fan clutch, I strongly suggest you also upgrade to this new fan. Again, this is an OEM component from MOPAR.

This is my first reply and I am still relatively new to the diesel truck group. I do have a 2002 VW Jetta TDI, which got me hooked on diesels and the desire to get myself my Ram truck

With the way diesel prices are going up, I was thinking of buying one of those Mileage Max modules (PoweEdge) and was thinking of also getting a Smarty or Smarty Jr. but, I was wondering if it would be a conflict and cause any complications to my truck?
