new diff bearings- setup

Can anyone here give some advice on re-bearing a dana 70U?

It appears to have a set of aftermarket bearings in it already. The carrier was zero-play but came out pretty easy. So, I'm guessing it will need a bit more pre-load.
FSM says carrier preload =0.015 and the DANA 70 manaual states =0.010??? What gives? It seems like the DANA specs are different on almost everything over DODGE?
Hoping that pinnion depth will be correct and not need changing- only play with pre-loading shims.

IF it were me I'd follow the Dana pre-sets...since it is "their" axle.

My friend & I have done a few at .015 and they all have lasted well so far (50k or more).

It is a lot easier to do if you have set-up bearings & a case spreader.

Even getting to the .015 can be a pain with no case spreader.

Wel... I guess well see. If came apart easy...

If needed I'll fab some spreader bars. I saw mixed discussions on some ppl love them and some do just fine without. Maybe the 5# deadblow is key in working the carrier in the housing.

If you are at zero ring gear clearance- drop 0.010 on the other side .. it should come close to 0.005 clearance. 15 ~ 0.0075. Understandibly, if you open the case.. and shim. THen your sliding it in- zero clearance instead of interference fit.

I can make a set of master bearing cones if needed.

Did you have to change pinnion depth with new bearings????
