New 1st Gen, couple questions, please

Just bought an '89 today, auto, trans rebuilt 25K ago, engine 158K, 2wd with stock tires.

I did the smoke screw adjustment and turned up the pump a litltle, made a lot of difference, thanks for the tech tips!

I get 74mph with the pedal as hard to the floor as possible, that's it. Also, I have a bad leg from being shot in the army and it's killing me to keep the old foot strained to keep her rolling.

Has anyone added an aftermarket cruise control and have a brand and source to suggest? Also, I'm assuming the top speed is limited by the governor, is there a source and suggestion for a little more revs?

I did immediately do an oil change, changed the fuel filter, changed the air filter, added red line 500 to the tank and filled the fuel filter with an injector cleaner.

Thoughts?

Thanks

few tips, check the throttle linkage to make sure its using all the travel, have wifey hold pedal to the floor and you rotate the throttle under the hood, good bet theres a lot of slack.

it also has a high speed screw you can back out, it might give you a few more rpm's. it looks like an idle screw on drivers side of the pump.

the trannys in our trucks is 727 it has no o/d, but theres a kick down cable replacement to make pedal easier to push.

Sounds like maybe it has the 4.10 rear gear in it. Other than installing the 366 spring to increase your rev limit, that's about all the faster it will ever go. Mine was the same way, with the Getrag 5sp before I installed the 366 govenor spring. It pulls right up to 90mph ater that mod. Not that I drive like a maniac now, but it's nice to have the top end for passing on the interstate.

first mine as im sure yours is a 3.07 rear, its a spicer. but with no O/D and a relitivly low rpm they are a bit slow at top end. Audiovox does make a decent cruise i have one and it works well, there are two get the better one, the cheapo surges a tad.http://www.audiovox.com/webapp/wcs/s...1067&langId=-1

hum i see all questions are answered unless you want instalation which is avalible for a case of beers and good conversation

Thanks, how about a source for door seals, window wipes, 3200 spring and such, hinge for drivers door has bushing missing and sags, etc. Roof has rust that was "patched" with alum tape, I'm gonna have it repaired and probably do a down and dirty paint job with new seals, etc. and then she's ready to roll.

I only paid 2K so I can spend some bucks and still be ahead.

This rounds me out in the diesel department, I just gave little brother my 2000 powerstroke for christmas, I have Cats in one boat and Detroits in another and an old Benz 300SD and just sold a boat with Yanmars. What a neat truck, when I get past the 74 mph mark, I'll be happy.

Do a search for "366 governor spring" or something like that, the last 3 #'s will be 366, that's the one you want. It can be bought from any bosch dealer, piers has it too, but charged me $9 for freight. Take your time and have a well lit area to install the spring, especially if its your first time taking the pump top off. Do a search for install details too, it may be in the tech articles. Good luck and have fun, I loved my 3 sp auto truck.

haha, i hate jamming my foot into the pedel to reach 65 in my 89! (have not yet adjusted cable) i've thought about keeping a piece of 1" dowel to jam into the pedal with my right hand for a white trash cruise control

very gracious of you to just give away your 2000 PSD so you could settle into an outdated, non overdrive, no lockup TC, 160 HP, 74 mph, old dodge CTD.

Yep, I'm inquisitive and I know how to bow to superior knowledge, I appreciate the tips, saved me loads of time and trouble.

I've regretted giving up the PSD, but, it's little brother.... I just need this truck as a beater, etc. I have a new Joe Gibb supercharged chevy that I'm trashing by hauling boat junk and I actually like older stuff. Who am I kidding, I'm addicted to the diesel sound and smell!
