Need suspension advice, please

Help out a total noob here, please.
Dad gave me his truck a few week back.
We plan on pulling a fifth wheel within a year.
Got it all cleaned up and checked out BUT the shocks look original and one appear to leak.
What brand/type would you suggest? Anyone who pulls, what would you tell me?
Although I have a old-school understanding of all of this, I ask that you to please keep your suggestions fairly simple.

Thank you!
E.

Jim Lane recommended some Pro Comp ES3000 Hydraulic shocks, as the common "gas Magnum" or "gas Grande" shocks ride rough, beat up your suspension components and get hot. I ordered a set for my 1973 D200 cummins conversion and they ride great.

I've had Ranchos and now Bilsteins on the front.... can't tell the difference.

I had Ranchos and Monroe Magnums (HD yellow ones) on the rear. Also can't tell the difference.

IMO, go with the Magnums unless you need something longer.

I have Ranchos all the way around...and they seem fine to me. Really though with the stiff suspension in these 4wd trucks I don't see a the difference between shocks really impacting the ride too much. But being that your 2wd that could possibly benifit from better shocks. I'd take Jim's recommendation on shocks, he's pretty thorough when it comes to researching his items for his truck.

Thank you

Going with the Pro Comp ES3000, if my shop can get them.

I ordered those Pro Comp ES 3000s from 4 Wheel Parts for my '89 RC project.

I just replaced the rears on my truck a few weeks ago and am more then happy with them. They're cheap, but they work great and the valving feels perfect. Kyb 344086 is what I got.
