Need some advice on a 93 w250
 
Hello all, I haven't been on here in a long time and have been meaning to get on here and ask for a little help or opinions.


So I have a 1993 4x4 w250 with the Cummins that I have owned for about 4 years. All stock, except a small a small lift. The sticker under the hood says I have 3.5 axle gear ratio. I have a 4 speed auto trans. I had the injector pump rebuilt by Maximum Diesels in Hemet about 2 years ago.


I tow a 12' single axle trailer with a Yamaha Rhino on it. Total weight is probably less than 2000lbs. Which should be nothing for this truck.


The folks in the Southern California area might know the area I am describing. My issue is when I get on the 14 freeway from the 5 there is a decent grade. I can only go up the hills all the way to the Palmdale area at 45 to maybe 50mph max. I don't have gauges to see what my EGT's are or boost or RPM. I don't want to push the truck too hard, as I notice my fuel consumption is drastically decreased if I do. Even without towing my trailer I have issues on grades.


I would like to get opinions of those with the same trucks to see if this is a normal thing? I usually leave an hour before my group so that I will be in Tehachapi about the time they get there.


Is there anything I could do to improve my overall drivability? Would different transmission and or gearing improve things? I would like to be able to at least keep up with the big rigs and not have to drive in the truck lane with my flashers on. I like my truck and don't mind have all the gadgets the new ones have but I would like to be able to keep up with traffic.

How big are your tires?
I find once you get to 37s or so 4.10 gearing can be nice.

Put boost and EGT gauges on and then tune the fuel pump so you can leave at the same time with your friends.

Your auto transmission might need some love to deal with the new power though, depending on how much power you tune it for.
A better flex plate and torque converter come to mind.

So I am not that knowledgeable on tires but I believe the tires are 32's. Here are some pictures.

That is a really nice looking truck.
You should have no problems towing a small trailer like that with 3.54 gears and those tires.
I would not recommend re-gearing to 4.10s.
I would research tuning the pump and maybe some auto upgrades...after you install some gauges. A transmission temp gauge might be nice to have as well.

366 spring next
Turn,up fuel screw
Spin the,fuel pin to,deepest setting.

T-man made the "to-do" list, just about like I would.

Your wheeling' buddies might want to think about leaving early to meet you with even those free pump mods.:cool:
Other than the $18 366 spring - which is money well spent.

I hate getting up early. I used to leave at 4am like everyone else now I leave at 3am so we all get to the same place and the same time. But usually one buddy will fly by me at 80mph towing a 35' fully loaded toy hauler. I just shake my head. I just want to be able to do 65 and not have the big rigs go around me.

Sweet ride.... You will be pleased with what I recommended, as I was myself. I will warn you, its been said that once you tinker with power, its a slippery slope, and you will require self control to not pursue further.

I have had issues with my KSB staying on all the time and killing some of my power and torque. The KSB is controlled by a air temp sensor in the intake and if it goes bad you can have either no 12V to the KSB for warm up in the morning, or 12V all the time which will advance you timing constantly, and I have found drop your fuel pressure too.

I would hook a test light to the KSB wire connector and see if you have power first thing in the morning when it's cool out, then after 5-10 min of driving check again, if the test light comes on then your sensor is bad. But try popping the connection off the KSB and see if your power improves.;)

The 366 spring and free pump mods are money and time well spent.

While you are doing gauges ( that we all highly recomend ) go on and put a trans temp in the pan, and if you can spring for an aftermarket pan it will have a port for a sendng unit for the gauge.

I find myself watching the trans temp more than any other one.


the pump rebuilder may have set your fuel screw a little weak.
