Need help choosing a rear diff..

I don't know which way to go for a rear differential... locking, limited slip, etc.

My truck is just a street truck basically, I don't run it at the drag strip, or pull with it. I want something that will still let my truck tow. I also want something that will allow me to continue to drive my truck in winter in 2wd.

I cant think of any other information to give to help you to make a better recommendation.

What should I get?

If you go with Detroit, they don't make they're TrueTrac clutchless limited slip for the 32-splined Dana 70. The only choice you'd have with them is a locker which applies a continuous 100% torque to both wheels. It'll cost you about $700. It's probably what I'm gonna go with eventually.

A guy I work with says his buddy with a Dana 60'd Bronco has a detroit "soft" locker... what is that?

EDIT: I thought we had a dana 60 for a rear axle?

If you're truck has a factory LSD and if it's not working right, have it rebuilt. The factory limited slip in our trucks is actually pretty darn good, especially for what you wanna do with the truck.

If your diff is an open one, maybe go to a locker unless you can pick up a decent d70 rear with a good limited slip for a good price.

I believe my truck has an open diff based on what I was told to look for when I replaced the cover 2 years ago. Basically, just a big open space in there.

Swapping axles is something I don't really want to do.

Dana 70 rears on both 2x4 and 4x4 trucks. Dana 60 fronts on the 4x4's.

Not sure about the "soft" locker. Never heard one described that way.

Head, get a factory locker for it. For the street they are great. I have 2 of them, wish the 3rd truck had one too. Massive traction increase going to posi.

You do not want a Detroit locker for your truck and what you do with it, they are a pain to back a trailer with and you have to coast around any corner you don't want "scrub" you inside tire with. And you have to get used to the "click click Boom" you get while driving with one of these Detroits.

If you don't want to change to a Dana 80 or a 14 bolt for better options with aftermarket limited slip units you would be best off finding a factory limited slip like every one is suggesting.

I would look into a torsen differential, IMHO the best design.

Google torsen, they are the manufacturer, same as what comes stock in aam diffs in newer trucks, infact they have been around for ever, just overlooked. No clutches to wear out, quiet, very strong. It's a very simple design when you see how they work!

I love my Detroit Locker. I will never go back to a limited slip.
