Mystery Hoses

Im under my truck lookin to see how to get the stater off and i notice a hose coming out of the top of my frontend its about 2 ft long and capped on the end. The rear also has one. What the heck is it? The was jokin around and said they are air lockers Thatd be sweet but i dont think so.

Its the vent hose for the differential, lets air in and out as the oil heats up and cools down, but keeps water from getting in, mostly.

I saw my vent hose for the front diff dragging on the street. can someone tell me where the free end is normally located?

There's a spring steel clip that holds it to the front crossmember. It probably rotted off.

The clip is still there on the dragging hose. I'll look for a decent place on the crossmember to clip it to.
