My new 90 one ton

So I just picked up a 1990 one ton. Its in pretty good condtion as far as I can tell, zero rust, and has ~97k on the clock. The issue with it is that its blowing oil out the dipstick. The PO says the #6 injector line cracked, while pulling a heavy trailer up a steep hill so he seems to think the piston has a hole in it. Do you guys think his assesment is pretty accurate? It seems to run and drive well, but I have never had one before. I'm pretty new to diesels but not gas engines. I'm hoppeing I didn't do to bad paying 1400 delivered.

1400 was a good deal man don't worry about that, it looks solid and the front of the cab roof gutter doesn't look rotted out which is a typical rust area.

Looks like a good deal. Even if it needs an engine.

If it still runs I can't imagine it being a bad piston.

and that interior is the exact same interior in our 90, i love it. It's like maroon and not like that bright red my 91 has.

Sounds like a pretty good deal man.

When running it does it miss at all?

Oh and you could get more than 1400 pretty easily parting it out

Down by the starter there's a 3/4" hose hanging down. Does smoke come out of that too?

It doesn't sound like its missing, but the engine has a pretty good rocking motion to it.

Yes it does, just checked, also you can actually hear it coming out when your standing by the truck.

The PO is right that the motor is hurt. Could be a holed piston, could be a badly scored cylinder wall.

Yeah, I was pretty sure he was right, just checking to see if there were anymore options, but I guess I'll quite stalling and take the head off and see whats going on.

Okay so this is what I'm looking at. Is there a way to fix this with the block in the truck? Also it appears its already an over sized piston. All the other pistons look great.

Make sure you have the injectors all rebuilt. It may have had a lazy injector cause that being its only 1 cylinder. It also looks as if its been chewing on something with the dents in it???

I don't think that's fixable I think it's gonna need a bore/hone and definely a new piston.

Yeah I was wondering about the dents myself, have no idea really since I didn't see much on the head. But I will have the injectors rebuilt.

Yeah I was just wondering if I could do all that without having to pull the engine.

The "dents" are where the piston was melting.

Time to pull the engine. It's perfectly OK to redo just the one bad cylinder, the rest of them will probably go another 400k so no sense tossing perfectly good parts.
