He didn't care for the fact that it had an auto, but he really likes the 5.9L Cummins so be sprung for the truck. Any opinions on the 46rh auto?

I'd like to give him information on the trans, so any help would be appreciated.

 

It's pretty reliable, but the torque converter is way too sloppy. A low stall converter and a shift kit will do wonders for it.

Most common problems/questions:

Doesn't move right after a cold start: This is because the trans does not circulate fluid in Park. Idling for a minute in neutral will fill the torque converter with fluid and get you going.

Won't go into OD: If the speedo works, it's the TPS. If the speedo doesn't work, it's the VSS.

 

dont forget you have to check your fluid in nuetral NOT park.

 

I thought the first gens had A518's

 

I had a '93 and the main problem with the tranny is overheating. There is no way to know it's happening without gauges and those trucks will pull until they self destruct. I worked mine while towing till it burned the oil. The only sign that something had happened was poor shifting. If you work it be sure to monitor the tranny temp and maybe install another cooler. It also was tempermental about going into OD. Besides the reasons mentioned already, the throttle linkage needs to work freely and be greased once in a while where the throttle cable connects to the kickdown linkage.

It says right on the hood that it has a "std duty trans A518" but I looked that up online and it's also called a 46rh.

I really like it she's a puller. she shows 148 on the clock but that don't slow
her down. I am really happy with that diesel,but reading the comments I
am worried about that tranny temp. thing. I pull a horse trailer,and a 23ft
runabout,and some times in some pretty hot temp,and this tranny temp thing
has me concerned.So could some one out there let me know ho to install a
guage. Also she is stock as a rock but I am thinking about putting 4'' exhaust
is this a good idea. Thanks for any info.

You could install a temp sender in the tranny pan by installing a fitting next time the oil gets changed or get a Mag Hi-Tech pan with increased capacity from Genos. They already have the tapped hole for the sender, and a little extra oil might make a difference in the temps. But definately keep an eye on it if pulling hard in warm weather. I toasted mine on a cool evening with occasional rain pulling a 48 foot trailer through the Siskiyous.

The four inch exhaust is a nice thing but with only 160 HP it won't make much difference other than sound. But, if you intend to bomb it..........
